Da meine persönliche Meinung zu GOTTHARD in den beiden letzten Jahren massiv gelitten hat, konnte ich mir den Gedanken nicht verkneifen, dass dort, wo POP draufsteht, auch POP drin ist. Ist das so?
Die Truppe um den kreativen Kopf Leo Leoni steckt aktuell gerade in einem Umbruch – Drummer Hena Habegger hat sich eine Auszeit genehmigt, um sich seiner Familie und seinen kleinen Kindern zu widmen und Leo Leoni investiert viel in sein eigenes Projekt CORELEONI. Kann die Band unter diesen Umständen an frühere, rockigere Zeiten anknüpfen?
Das Album „#13“ ist stark symbolisch; das dreizehnte Studioalbum mit 13 Tracks, das an einem Freitag, den 13. erscheint. Nach Aussagen der Band ist es aber auch eine Art Rückschau in eine Bandgeschichte mit ups und downs. Der grösste Einschnitt wird dabei der Tod von Steve Lee bleiben. GOTTHARD haben dort ihre Stimme verloren, die Welt einen der genialsten Sänger überhaupt. So ganz haben sich die Band und ihre Musik nie davon erholt. NIC MAeder macht einen guten Job, seine stimmlichen Qualitäten und sein Charisma werden nie den Level Lees erreichen.
Nichts desto trotz macht die Band weiter, und mit „#13“ beweisen sie, dass es sich lohnt, wenn man sich neu besinnt und nacch dem Umfallen wieder aufsteht. Noch sind die Jungs kreativ genug, um selbst meine Enttäuschung verfliegen zu lassen. Klar, „#13“ ist kein richtig harter Knochen geworden – aber allemal ein Album, das sich Hardrock nennen darf. GOTTHARD haben ohne Zweifel zu früheren Werten zurückgefunden, ohne im Alten stecken zu bleiben. 13 Tracks, die weitgehend wieder rockiger sind, wieder mehr Power bieten, mehr Spass.
Ob es die Coverversion von „S.O.S.“ von ABBA gebraucht hätte, darüber lässt sich trefflich streiten. Immerhin bietet der Song Nic Maeder die Gelegenheit zu zeigen, was er stimmlich drauf hat. Das Pop-Emblem des Songs bringen sie allerdings auch mit ihrer Powerballade nicht ganz weg.
Was mir sehr gut gefällt ist der Rock’n’Roll – Song „Save The Date“ – der hat etwas leichtes, fröhlich, klingt nach Aufbruch. „No Time To Cry“ wiederum ist eine Hymne, wie wir sie von GOTTHARD gewohnt sind und wie wir sie lieben. Schwwachpunkt des Albums ist für mich „I Can Say I’m Sorry“, der Song ist langweilig und musikalisch mittelmässig.
Fazit
Manchmal freut es mich, wenn ich Lügen gestraft werde. Ich finde die Entwicklung der „Defrosted“-Tour zwar nach wie vor tragisch, das neue Album „#13“ von GOTTHARD stimmt mich aber zuversichtlich. Die Ticinesi haben zum Rock zurückgefunden und liefern eine erfreulich gute Scheibe ab.

Under these circumstances, can the band tie in with earlier, more rocky times?
The album „#13“ is strongly symbolic; the thirteenth studio album with 13 tracks, which will be released on Friday the 13th. But according to the band, it is also a kind of retrospect into a band history with ups and downs. The biggest break will remain the death of Steve Lee. GOTTHARD have lost their voice there, the world one of the most brilliant singers ever. The band and their music have never quite recovered from that. NIC MAeder is doing a good job, his vocal qualities and charisma will never reach the level of Lee’s. Nevertheless the band continues, and with „#13“ they prove that it’s worth it, if you think about it anew and get up again after falling down. The guys are still creative enough to let even my disappointment vanish. Sure, „#13“ hasn’t become a really hard bone – but it’s an album that can call itself hard rock. GOTTHARD have without doubt found their way back to former values without getting stuck in the old one. 13 tracks, which are more rocky again, offer more power, more fun. Whether it would have taken the cover version of „S.O.S.“ by ABBA or not, that’s debatable. At least the song gives Nic Maeder the opportunity to show what he can do with his voice. The pop emblem of the song they don’t completely get rid of with their power ballad. What I like very much is the Rock’n’Roll song „Save The Date“ – it has something light, happy, sounds like a new beginning. „No Time To Cry“ on the other hand is a hymn as we are used to it from GOTTHARD and as we love it. The weak point of the album for me is „I Can Say I’m Sorry“, the song is boring and musically mediocre.
Conclusion
Sometimes I’m happy to be told lies. I still find the development of the „Defrosted“ tour tragic, but the new album „#13“ by GOTTHARD makes me feel confident. The Ticinesi have found their way back to rock and deliver a pleasingly good album.
