Die ehemaligen THUNDERMOTHER-Mitglieder Guernica Mancini (Gesang), Emlee Johansson (Drums) und Mona Lindgren (Gitarre) bündeln in GEMS ihre Erfahrungen – allerdings mit spürbar anderer Ausrichtung. Während THUNDERMOTHER stark im klassischen Hard Rock verwurzelt war, wirkt „Year Of The Snake“ persönlicher, kantiger und emotional aufgeladener.
Man hört förmlich, dass hier nicht einfach eine neue Band gegründet wurde, sondern dass ein kreativer Befreiungsschlag stattgefunden hat.
Das Album bewegt sich zwischen modernem Hard Rock, Alternative-Einflüssen und stellenweise fast hymnischen Momenten. Es bleibt riffgetrieben, öffnet sich aber stärker für Dynamik und Atmosphäre.
Muss man sich auf einzelne Tracks fokussieren? Nicht zwingend, denn das Album hat definitiv keinen Hänger.
Der Titeltrack etwa ist ein absoluter Hookliner, ähnlich „Live And Let Go“. „Clout Chaser“ ist spannend, weil das wie ein rockgetriebener popsong klingt – einfach viel zu hart für Pop…
Was mir auch sehr gut gefällt; „Hot Bait“ klingt ein wenig wie ZZ TOP in weiblich.
Die Songs wirken insgesamt direkter als bei THUNDERMOTHER gleichzeitig aber emotional vielschichtiger. Texte über Selbstbehauptung, Verrat und Neuanfang ziehen sich als roter Faden durch das Album.
Produktion und Songwriting sind klar auf Wirkung ausgelegt: druckvolle Drums, präzise Gitarrenarbeit und eine Stimme, die im Zentrum steht, ohne alles zu dominieren. Besonders auffällig ist, wie gut die Band ihre Energie kanalisiert – nichts wirkt überladen, vieles dafür bewusst reduziert und fokussiert.
Im Vergleich zur Vergangenheit klingt „Year Of The Snake“ weniger retro und stärker im Hier und Jetzt verankert. Die Band löst sich hörbar vom klassischen Hard-Rock-Revival-Sound und entwickelt eine eigenständigere Identität.

„Year Of The Snake“ ist mehr als ein Debüt – es ist eine Selbstbehauptung. GEMS nutzen die Bruchstelle ihrer Vergangenheit als kreative Triebfeder und liefern ein Album ab, das sowohl roh als auch reflektiert wirkt. Kaufen? Klar kaufen!

Former THUNDERMOTHERmembers Guernica Mancini (vocals), Emlee Johansson (drums) and Mona Lindgren (guitar) have pooled their experience in GEMS – though with a noticeably different direction. Whilst THUNDERMOTHER was firmly rooted in classic hard rock, „Year Of The Snake“ feels more personal, edgier and emotionally charged.
You can literally hear that this isn’t simply a new band being formed, but that a creative breakthrough has taken place.
The album moves between modern hard rock, alternative influences and, at times, almost anthemic moments. It remains riff-driven, but opens up more to dynamics and atmosphere.
Do you need to focus on individual tracks? Not necessarily, as the album definitely has no weak spots.
The title track, for instance, is an absolute earworm, similar to “Live And Let Go”. “Clout Chaser” is exciting because it sounds like a rock-driven pop song – simply far too heavy for pop…
Something else I really like: “Hot Bait” sounds a bit like a female version of ZZ Top.
Overall, the songs feel more direct than THUNDERMOTHER’s, yet at the same time emotionally more complex. Lyrics about self-assertion, betrayal and new beginnings run like a thread through the album.
The production and songwriting are clearly designed to make an impact: powerful drums, precise guitar work and a voice that takes centre stage without dominating everything. It’s particularly striking how well the band channels its energy – nothing feels overloaded; much of it is deliberately pared back and focused.
Compared to the past, “Year Of The Snake” sounds less retro and more firmly rooted in the here and now. The band is audibly moving away from the classic hard rock revival sound and developing a more distinctive identity.

„Year Of The Snake“ is more than a debut – it is a statement of self-assertion. GEMS use the breaking point of their past as a creative driving force and deliver an album that feels both raw and reflective. Buy it? Definitely buy it!
