Die Abertausenden Leserinnen und Leser meiner Reviews wissen es; political correctness liegt mir ebenso fern wie hoch intellektueller Humor – stur und bewusst. Soviel zum Einstieg.
Jetzt aber extrem schnell zur Band. GARAGE DAYS ist eine richtig fette Truppe irgendwo aus der österreichischen Provinz, welche seit 2008 besteht und mit „Something Black“ ihr bereits viertes Album veröffentlicht. Fronter Marco Kern werkelt neben dem Mikrofon auch am Sechssaiter, Dominik Eder malträtiert den Bass, Rene Auer heult auf der Leadklampfe rum und Matthias MMeine Freunde von El Puerto Records haben damit einen richtig grossen Fisch an der Angel.ai liefert einen ziemlich korrekten Job an den Drums. Die Jungs wirken ziemlich motiviert und haben sich hohe Ziele gesteckt – sie wollen nichts weniger als die Speerspitze des österreichischen Metal werden. Mir scheint die österreichische Szene soweit übersichtlich, dass ich behaupten möchte, dass die Mannen schon ziemlich nah dran sind.

Musikalisch siedeln die Jungs in den Gefilden des Heavy oder Thrash Metal, gewürzt mit einigen Rockattitüden der harten Art. Kurz und gut, die Jungs sind voll fett, hauen richtig rein. Da fehlt nichts, was echten Metal ausmacht; schreddernde Riffs, ein enormer Druck aus dem Bereich Drums und Bass uns mehr als seriöse Gesangsarbeit. Auch die songwriterische Breite spreizt ordentlich – melden sich hier doch beinahe doomige Klänge wie „Out Of Control“ bis hin zu reinen Trash-Speed-Nummern wie „Something Black“ zu Wort.
Mir persönlich passen ja die „vorwärts-marsch“-Tracks am Besten, also etwa „I Be There“ oder „Back In Line“. Was die Jungs erstaunlicherweise auch sehr gut beherrschen; Powewrballaden wie „My Own Way“ oder grungige Tracks wie „To My Soul“ oder „Walkind Dead“.

Fazit

Kurz und gut, ohne langes Herumreden; „Something Black“ ist mit eines der besten Alben, das mir dieses Jahr untergekommen ist. Die Österreicher hauen fett rein, sind musikalisch super aufgestellt und zeichnen sich durch ein hammermässiges Songwriting aus. Das ist eine wahre Freude in diesem eher tristen Jahr!

The thousands and thousands of readers of my reviews know it; political correctness is as far from my mind as highly intellectual humour – stubborn and conscious. So much for the introduction.
But now let’s get to the band extremely quickly. GARAGE DAYS is a really fat band somewhere in the Austrian province, which has been in existence since 2008 and with „Something Black“ is releasing its fourth album. Fronter Marco Kern works not only on the microphone but also on the six-string, Dominik Eder maltreats the bass, Rene Auer howls on the lead guitar and Matthias MMmy friends from El Puerto Records have a really big fish on the hook with it. The guys seem quite motivated and have set themselves high goals – they want nothing less than to become the spearhead of Austrian Metal. To me the Austrian scene seems to be so clear that I would say that the guys are already pretty close.

Musically, the boys are settling in the realms of Heavy or Thrash Metal, spiced with some rock attitudes of the hard kind. In short, the guys are fat, they really hit it. There is nothing missing that makes real Metal; shredding riffs, an enormous pressure from drums and bass us more than serious vocal work. Also the songwriter’s breadth is quite wide – almost doomy sounds like „Out Of Control“ up to pure trash speed numbers like „Something Black“.
For me personally the „forwards march“ tracks fit best, for example „I Be There“ or „Back In Line“. Which the guys are surprisingly good at; power ballads like „My Own Way“ or grungy tracks like „To My Soul“ or „Walkind Dead“.

Conclusion

Short and sweet, no long talk; „Something Black“ is one of the best albums I have heard this year. The Austrians hit it big, are musically super positioned and distinguish themselves through their awesome songwriting. This is a real joy in this rather sad year!
