Hab mich da auf Wikipedia mal schlau gemacht;
„Die wässrige Lösung von Formaldehyd wird als Formalin oder seltener als Formol bezeichnet. Formaldehyd ist eine organisch-chemische Verbindung mit der Summenformel CH₂O und der einfachste Vertreter aus der Stoffgruppe der Aldehyde. Unter Standardbedingungen ist Formaldehyd ein Gas mit einem stechenden Geruch.„
Merke aber jetzt, dass mich das für eine Review nicht weiterbringt – kann ja kaum sein, dass das Attribut für eine Industrialband „Gas mit stechendem Geruch“ ist, oder?
Dann doch lieber zum Genre; für all jene, die es nicht wissen oder bisher nicht interessiert hat; das ist der Musikstil, wie ihn EISBRECHER oder RAMMSTEIN spielen, oder NINE INCH NAILS oder MARYLIN MANSON – wobei mir die Puristen natürlich widersprechen werden, MANSON und NIN eher als Ramsch-Rock bezeichnen, RAMMSTEIN und EISBRECHER als Neue Deutsche Härte – oder so. Da ich aber hier nicht für Puristen schreib, einfach mal so; tendenziell gehören zu Industrial monotone, metallische, mechanische Soundwände – industriell halt. Diese werden dann mit verschiedensten Elementen in Klänge verwandelt und aufgemotzt – häufig eben rockige Gitarren, auf jeden Fall aber Keyboards oder Synthesizer. Auch Sampler oder Sequenzer sind erlaubt. Soviel zur Theorie – etwas gar ausführlich, oder?

Wenden wir uns jetzt aber FORMALIN zu, einem Zweimannprojekt aus Berlin, welches wie gesagt nach qualitativ hochwertigen Boxen mit leistungsfähigen Bassmembranen verlangt.
Involviert in dieses Album sind Songwriter und Sänger Tom sowie sein Keyboarder und Produzent Gabor, live verstärkt durch den Drummer Cosmo.

Die Mucke ist extrem druckvoll, wühlt Gehör und Magengrube ordentlich auf, wenn du sie auf kühlschrankgrossen Lautsprechern hörst – was eigentlich Bedingung ist.
Was auch geht, sind diese überbebassten Kackkopfhörer Beats von DR. DRE. Die können ja nicht viel mehr als Bass – das aber immerhin satt.
Also, FORMALIN darf man gerne sehr laut hören, sollte man sogar. Interessant dabei – der Sound ist zwar hart, die Texte sind dreckig und handeln weitgehend vom extremen und überbordenden städtischen Livestyle, sie sind aber nicht schnell. FORMALIN sind definitiv eher die „Clubband“ für die Dark- oder Gothic-Szene – auf einem Metalfestival würde man sie wohl eher selten antreffen – im Gegensatz eben zu RAMMSTEIN oder EISBRECHER. Ich finde den Sound technisch ausgezeichnet, die einzelnen Tracks sind erstaunlich vielfältig für ein Genre, das Monotonie als einen seiner Standpfeiler definiert.
Mein Liebling auf dem Album? „Down Low“ ein mit Synkopen gespickter Beginn, dann eine richtig rockige Gitarren-Riffwall – und über allem eine Stimme, die dem Sound die Würze gibt, aber auch den Dreck in diese eher klinische, mechanische Welt transportiert.
Nimm die typischen Industrial- Elemente weg, ersetze sie durch fette Doublebeats und schnelle Gitarrensounds – du hast einen perfekten Rock- oder Metalsänger! Aber eben, das ist nicht die Intention. Die Jungs repräsentieren keine Viking-Sagas oder Hardcore-Breakdowns oder todesmetallische Growls – sie mögen es lieber basslastig und in den Gehörgängen desinfiziert.

Fazit

Damit wären wir wieder – wie habe ich doch den Spannungsbogen wieder geil konstruiert und den Kreis geschlossen – beim Formalin als Desinfektions- und Stabilisierungsmittel in der Medizin. Das ist übrigens ziemlich sicher krebserregend und somit weniger zum Verzehr geeignet, als das neuen Album „Love And Nihilism“ von FORMALIN, das am 11. Juni erscheint. Wer Industrial mag – Pflicht!

I looked it up on Wikipedia;
„The aqueous solution of formaldehyde is called formalin or, more rarely, formol. Formaldehyde is an organic chemical compound with the molecular formula CH₂O and the simplest member of the aldehyde group. Under standard conditions, formaldehyde is a gas with a pungent odour.„
But now I realise that this doesn’t help me for a review – it can hardly be that the attribute for an industrial band is „gas with a pungent odour“, can it?
Then I’d rather talk about the genre; for all those who don’t know or haven’t been interested so far; this is the style of music played by EISBRECHER or RAMMSTEIN, or NINE INCH NAILS or MARYLIN MANSON – although the purists will of course disagree with me, calling MANSON and NIN rather junk rock, RAMMSTEIN and EISBRECHER New German Hardness – or something. But since I’m not writing for purists here, let’s just say that industrial tends to be monotonous, metallic, mechanical walls of sound – industrial, that is. These are then transformed into sounds and pimped with the most diverse elements – often rock guitars, but in any case keyboards or synthesizers. Samplers and sequencers are also allowed. So much for the theory – a little too detailed, isn’t it?

But now let’s turn to FORMALIN, a two-man project from Berlin, which, as I said, calls for high-quality speakers with powerful bass cones.
Involved in this album are songwriter and singer Tom as well as his keyboardist and producer Gabor, live reinforced by drummer Cosmo.

This music is extremely powerful, and really stirs up your ears and the pits of your stomach if you listen to it on speakers the size of fridges – which is actually a requirement.
What also works are these overbassed crap headphone beats from DR. DRE. They can’t do much more than bass – but at least they’re full of it.
So, FORMALIN can be listened to very loudly, in fact you should. Interesting – the sound is hard, the lyrics are dirty and largely about the extreme and exuberant urban lifestyle, but they are not fast. FORMALIN are definitely more the „club band“ for the dark or gothic scene – at a metal festival you would probably meet them rather rarely – in contrast to RAMMSTEIN or EISBRECHER. I think the sound is technically excellent, the individual tracks are amazingly diverse for a genre that defines monotony as one of its pillars.
My favourite on the album? „Down Low“ a syncopated beginning, then a real rocking guitar riffwall – and above all a voice that spices up the sound, but also transports the dirt into this rather clinical, mechanical world.
Take away the typical industrial elements, replace them with fat doublebeats and fast guitar sounds – you have a perfect rock or metal singer! But that is not the intention. These guys don’t represent Viking sagas or hardcore breakdowns or death-metal growls – they prefer it bass-heavy and sanitised in the ear canals.

Which brings us back – how have I constructed the arc of suspense again in a cool way and closed the circle – to formalin as a disinfectant and stabilising agent in medicine. By the way, this is quite certainly carcinogenic and therefore less suitable for consumption than FORMALIN’s new album „Love And Nihilism“, which will be released on 11 June. If you like industrial – mandatory!
