Der Albumopener „Best With You“ oder „Take My Love To Town“ gehören eher zur härteren Sorte. Im mittleren Bereich finden sich Tracks wie „You Never Will“ oder „When Ignorance Turns To Bliss“ oder „Promise Land“..
„Same Old Blues“ repräsentiert dann die balladesken Heuler zusammen mit Can’t You See“. Und zu guter Letzt liefert der gute Mann auch noch Jazz-Attitüde mit „Since I’ve Been Loving You“ und „Good Day, Bad Day“.
Dabei ist mein Lieblingstrack „Take My Love To Town“, da er fetzig ist, Steckels Stimme und Riffing ebenso zeigt wie seine enormen Soloqualitäten. Einfach geil!

Fazit

Who releases his debut album at the tender age of 11, I can look back on a career of more than twenty years at 28. Eric Steckel has accomplished this feat and will release his sixth album on March 20th. Since his debut was a live version, it is Grandview Drive“ his fifth studio album.
Steckel has been playing all big and small blues festivals worldwide for over 20 years. His great patron was none other than blues giant John Mayall, who recognized the quality of this exceptional talent at the 2003 Sarasota Blues Festival. So he took the boy on board with the BLUESBREAKERS and took him on a Scandinavian tour through Sweden, Denmark and Norway.
Even though Steckel has long since become independent and grown up – his incredible talent has elevated him into the guild of the great guitarists – and singers!

The album „Grandview Drive“ contains 11 songs that couldn’t be more varied. There are rock songs as well as mid-tempo blues hits or ballads. The album opener „Best With You“ or „Take My Love To Town“ belong to the harder kind. In the middle range you can find tracks like „You Never Will“ or „When Ignorance Turns To Bliss“ or „Promise Land“.
„Same Old Blues“ represents the balladic howlers together with „Can’t You See“. And last but not least the good man also delivers jazz attitude with „Since I’ve Been Loving You“ and „Good Day, Bad Day“.
My favourite track is „Take My Love To Town“, because it’s cool, shows Steckel’s voice and riffing as well as his enormous solo qualities. Just awesome!

Conclusion

I dare to make a forecast now, although it’s only February; I would be surprised if a similarly good blues album would flutter onto my table this year. I couldn’t think of a bluesgiatrist who would deliver this year and come close to the quality of this Californian. ERIC STECKEL is the best this genre has to offer at the moment.
