Nachdem sich die Band personell neu orientiert hat, ist mit Nick Kaklanis ein neuer Drummer an Bord. Teo Savage an der Gitarre hingegen ist nicht neu dabei, sondern wieder zu EMERALD SUN zurückgekehrt – er war bereits bei den ersten beiden Alben mit dabei.
Am Mikrofon steht nach wie vor Stelios „Theo“ Tsakiridis, nichts verändert hat sich auch beim Bass mit Fotis Toumanidis sowie an der zweiten Gitarre mit Pavlos Georgiadis.
Zum Album; ich mag ja Powermetal, einerseits weil die Mucke harmonisch und melodiös ist, zum Mitsingen animiert und Elemente von Hardrock integriert – die Musiker dürfen solieren. Intellektuell hingegen zeichnen sich die meisten Bands durch niedrige Ansprüche aus – die Inhalte und Texte der Songs verlangen selten ein Studium der jeweiligen Sprache oder der Philosophie. Meist sind sie eher martialisch, thematisch oft etwas einseitig. Beispiel gefällig? SABATON zelebrieren seit jeher und wahrscheinlich in alle Ewigkeit ihre Kriegs- und Schlachtgeschichten. Das ist nicht zwingend negativ, es kann sich daraus durchaus coole Musik ergeben, und die meisten Powermetal Bands zeichnen sich durch gute Live Performances aus.
EMERALD SUN sind da nicht anders – Heldengeschichten prägen die Tracks. „Book Of Genesis“ etwa bezeichnet das erste Buch Mose, das sich mit der Erschaffung der Welt befasst. Ihr wisst schon, „am ersten Tag schuf der Herr…“ und so weiter. Oder „Gaia“, in der Sage die „personifizierte Erde, die das Baby Zeus davor bewahrte, von seinem Vater Kronos gefressen zu werden. Der hatte einfach keinen Bock darauf, dass einer seiner Söhne ihn stürzen würde und wollte das Problem final lösen. Wir wissen aus der Mythologie, dass das gründlich in die Hosen ging und Zeus letztlich der Oberchef wurde.
weiter geht es um Jäger, Helden, Königtümer und die Hölle – what else?
Spannender scheint mir da die Musik an sich zu sein. EMERALD SUN haben mit „Theo“ Tsakiridis einen ausgezeichneten und charismatischen Sänger, der die ganze Bandbreite an stimmlichen Herausforderungen meistern kann. Seine Stimme fühlt sich sowohl in schnellen Tracks wie „Raise Hell“ oder „Book Of Genesis“ wohl, genauso wie in den Powerballaden „Kingdom Of Gods“ oder „Where Warriors Belong“. Das ist wichtig auf einem Album, das den gesamten Range von schnellen Tracks über Midtemponummern bis hin zu Balladen bietet. Zu sagen ist noch, dass er im Gesang verstärkt wird, dass chorale Parts viele der Tracks bestimmen.
Mein Favorit auf dem Album? Mir gefallen die meisten der Tracks gut, „Book Of Genesis“ würde ich wegen des Gesangs hervorheben, ebenso „Where Warriors Belong“, der epischte Somg auf dem Album.
Fazit
„Kingdom Of Gods“ bietet alles, was ein gutes Power Metal Album braucht; gute Gitarren, variantenreichen Leadgesang, melodische Chorparts und einen stabilen, rhythmischen Unterbau bei Bass und Drums. Das alles bietet die fünfte Scheibe der Griechen. Was mir etwas fehlt und zum Punkteabzug führte, ist das Alleinstellungsmerkmal. Es gibt viele gute Power Metal Bands und EMERALD SUN ist eine davon – aber halt keine besondere, keine, die sich wirklich abhebt.
Dennoch – „Kingdom Of Gods“ ist ein schönes Album, das man sich ins persönliche Portfolio einverleiben sollte – Kaufen ist kein Fehler.

After the band’s personnel reorientation, a new drummer, Nick Kaklanis, is on board. Teo Savage on guitar, on the other hand, is not new, but has returned to EMERALD SUN – he was already part of the band for the first two albums.
Stelios „Theo“ Tsakiridis is still on the microphone, and nothing has changed on bass with Fotis Toumanidis and on second guitar with Pavlos Georgiadis.
About the album; I like power metal, on the one hand because the music is harmonious and melodic, encourages singing along and integrates elements of hard rock – the musicians are allowed to solo. Intellectually, on the other hand, most bands are characterised by low standards – the content and lyrics of the songs rarely require a study of the respective language or philosophy. Mostly they are rather martial, thematically often somewhat one-sided. An example? SABATON have always celebrated their war and battle stories, probably for all eternity. This is not necessarily negative, it can result in cool music, and most of the Powermetal bands stand out for their good live performances.
EMERALD SUN are no different – heroic stories characterise the tracks. „Book Of Genesis“, for example, refers to the first book of Moses, which deals with the creation of the world. You know, „on the first day the Lord created…“ and so on. Or „Gaia“, in the myth the „personified earth who saved the baby Zeus from being eaten by his father Kronos. He simply didn’t want one of his sons to overthrow him and wanted to solve the problem once and for all. We know from mythology that this went thoroughly wrong and Zeus ultimately became the supreme leader.
Further on, it’s all about hunters, heroes, kingdoms and hell – what else?
I think the music itself is more exciting. EMERALD SUN have in „Theo“ Tsakiridis an excellent and charismatic singer who can master the whole range of vocal challenges. His voice feels at home in fast tracks like „Raise Hell“ or „Book Of Genesis“ as well as in the power ballads „Kingdom Of Gods“ or „Where Warriors Belong“. This is important on an album that offers the whole range from fast tracks to midtempo numbers and ballads. It has to be said that it is strengthened in the vocals, that choral parts define many of the tracks.
My favourite on the album? I like most of the tracks well, „Book Of Genesis“ I would single out because of the vocals, as well as „Where Warriors Belong“, the most epic somg on the album.
Conclusion
„Kingdom Of Gods“ offers everything a good power metal album needs; good guitars, varied lead vocals, melodic chorus parts and a stable, rhythmic underbelly on bass and drums. The fifth album of the Greeks offers all that. What I miss a bit and what led to the deduction of points is the unique selling point. There are many good Power Metal bands and EMERALD SUN is one of them – but just not a special one, not one that really stands out.
Nevertheless – „Kingdom Of Gods“ is a nice album to add to your personal portfolio – buying it is no mistake.
