Es muss nicht immer Rock oder Metal sein. Und es muss nicht immer frisch aus der Album-Presse kommen. Tatsächlich hat die EP „Until The Moment Has Passed“ von DOWN ON EARTH schon ein paar Jahre auf der Rille. Das macht sie aber nicht weniger hörenswert und kann durchaus als Soundtrack zum Sommer verstanden werden.

Gegründet wurde die Band von Sänger/Gitarrist Andrea Lorefice, welcher zuvor als Strassenmusiker ein halbes Jahr die Welt bereiste und seine Eindrücke in eigenen Songs verarbeitete. Mit Dennis Mettler (Dr), Alan Tucci (B) und Luca Rüedi (Keys) wurden tatkräftige Mitstreiter gefunden und DOWN TO EARTH war geboren. Bereits Ende 2018 veröffentlichte der Vierer die 5+1 Songs umfassende EP im Eigenvertrieb. Für „Before You’re Gone“ wurde ebenfalls in Eigenregie ein Video produziert.

„Until The Moment Has Passed“ bietet bodenständigen und spritzigen Folk-Rock, gerne auch mal mit ein paar Indie- und Alternative-Anleihen, ohne ihre Singer/Songwriter-Herkunft zu verleugnen. Das Quartett erfindet das Genre nicht neu, bietet aber überaus stimmige Lieder mit schönen Arrangements, welche im Refrain zu zünden wissen, da und dort untermalt mit Gaststimme Jana Rüedi.

Bereits mit „The Song She Never Wrote“ zeigen DOWN ON EARTH, was auf der EP zu erwarten ist: süffisanter Folk im Pop-Gewand, der zum Mitschunkeln und Mitsingen animiert. Eingängig und urchig zugleich, treibend und doch sanft. Und ein eher eigenwilliger Gesangsstil, der sowohl den Wiedererkennungswert der Band ungemein steigert, mitunter aber die Verständlichkeit der lyrischen Texte strapaziert. Über die ganze Strecke der EP zumindest für mich gewöhnungsbedürftig, andererseits aber Spannend weil unverwechselbar. „Chainsmoker“ wiederholt das Rezept des vorangegangenen Stücks, während the „The Ink’s Legacy“ die Schwermütigkeit von Nick Cave und Tom Waits zelebriert. „Before You’re Gone“ beginnt als sanfte Ballade, wunderschön untermalt mit Cello und Violine und mündet in einem fulminanten Schluss. „Solitude“ schliesst das Album ab. Oder halt: Wer etwas Geduld mitbringt wird mit einem „Hidden Track“ belohnt, einem Liebeslied an „Shana“, mit der es in diesem Leben nicht geklappt hat.

Fazit

Mit „Until The Moment Has Passed“ ist DOWN ON EARTH eine schöne EP mit eingängigen, einfachen und dennoch vielschichtigen Songs gelungen. Der eine oder andere Song weiss, sich im Gehör festzusetzen und man ertappt sich beim Summen desselben. Grösstes Herausstellungsmerkmal ist der Gesang und die eigenwillige Intonation der Stücke. Für mich persönlich eher gewöhnungsbedürftig (das hat nichts mit der Gesangsqualität zu tun), aber andererseits gibt dies DOWN ON EARTH genau die eigene Note und den Wiedererkennungswert, den so viele andere Bands missen lassen. Die Band ist auch dieses Jahr mit Konzerten aktiv, bei welchen die Songs (bestimmt) noch besser wirken und leben. Also, Bleistift gezückt und Konzertdaten notiert.

It doesn’t always have to be rock or metal. And it doesn’t always have to be fresh out of the album press. In fact, DOWN ON EARTH’s EP „Until The Moment Has Passed“ has been on the groove for a couple of years. But that doesn’t make it any less worth listening to and can definitely be understood as a soundtrack to summer.

The band was founded by singer/guitarist Andrea Lorefice, who previously traveled the world for half a year as a street musician and processed his impressions into his own songs. With Dennis Mettler (Dr), Alan Tucci (B) and Luca Rüedi (Keys) energetic comrades-in-arms were found and DOWN TO EARTH was born. Already at the end of 2018, the foursome released the 5+1 song EP in self-distribution. For „Before You’re Gone“, a video was also produced on their own.

„Until The Moment Has Passed“ offers down-to-earth and lively folk rock, with a few indie and alternative touches at times, without denying their singer/songwriter origins. The quartet does not reinvent the genre, but offers extremely coherent songs with beautiful arrangements, which know how to ignite in the chorus, here and there accompanied by guest voice Jana Rüedi.

Already with „The Song She Never Wrote“ DOWN ON EARTH show what is to be expected on the EP: smug folk in pop garb that encourages swaying and singing along. Catchy and earthy at the same time, driving and yet gentle. And a rather idiosyncratic vocal style, which increases both the recognition value of the band immensely, but sometimes strains the comprehensibility of the lyrical lyrics. Over the whole distance of the EP at least for me to get used to, but on the other hand exciting because distinctive. „Chainsmoker“ repeats the recipe of the previous track, while the „The Ink’s Legacy“ celebrates the melancholy of Nick Cave and Tom Waits. „Before You’re Gone“ begins as a gentle ballad, beautifully underscored with cello and violin, and leads into a brilliant conclusion. „Solitude“ closes the album. Or stop: Those who bring a little patience will be rewarded with a „Hidden Track“, a love song to „Shana“, with whom it didn’t work out in this life.

With „Until The Moment Has Passed“ DOWN ON EARTH has succeeded in creating a nice EP with catchy, simple and yet multi-layered songs. One or the other song knows how to get stuck in the ear and you catch yourself humming the same. The biggest outstanding feature is the singing and the idiosyncratic intonation of the pieces. For me personally rather getting used to (this has nothing to do with the vocal quality), but on the other hand this gives DOWN ON EARTH exactly the own note and the recognition value, which so many other bands miss. The band is also active this year with concerts, in which the songs (certainly) work and live even better. So, pencil drawn and concert dates noted.
