DAWN OF DESTINY – „Of Silence“

Mit DAWN OF DESTINY in neue Gefilde eintauchen.

Dawn Of Destiny (c) by Britt Byrnes

Ein schlauer Schachzug also.

DAWN OF DESTINY jedoch machen alles richtig.

As a reviewer, one always has the opportunity to venture out of one’s genre comfort zone into uncharted waters. So it is with DAWN OF DESTINY from our northern neighboring country, who have dedicated themselves to Symphonic Metal. Not the first choice when I put something on my turntable (and I do NOT mean my non-existent hair). One thing in advance: DAWN OF DESTINY are not the typical 10298th NIGHTWISH offshoot, but bring a generous personal scent to the genre rather foreign to me and are not stingy with other stylistic borrowings. And that’s a good thing.

Founded around 2005, the five-piece presents the already eighth longplayer, which is packed with 13 tracks for a good hour of entertainment. „Of Silence“ begins with eight-minute „We Are Your Voice“, which already demands a lot from the listener at the beginning, changes one by one in the course of the eight minutes and leads into a great chorus. A brave choice to put this song at the beginning of the album. This shows self-confidence and shows that DAWN OF DESTINY is convinced of their songs. And whoever gets involved in „We Are Your Voice“ gets in the eight minutes compressed what awaits him on the rest of the album. A smart move, then.

It doesn’t get quite so intricate on the rest of the album, the further songs are more accessible. With „Judas In Me“ follows the first single release, which sprays a dark basic mood and with a powerful guitar board makes the foot bob along. The chorus belongs to the category „Special“ – in this case, however, an extremely positive „Special“ – and immediately tempts you to… uh… speak. It continues with „Childhood“, where Chris Harms from LORD OF THE LOST makes a guest appearance and adds his personal touch to the song. And already the single number two follows: „Say My Name“ pushes off properly and drifts into Power Metal waters, however, ignites for me not quite as „Judas In Me“. With „Little Flower“ and „Silence“ there are also two power ballads on the album, and after a little over an hour the final chord of „This Is Our Legacy“ fades away, which at seven and a half minutes is once again twice the length of most of the other songs and both begins and ends with a piano.

conclusion

You can do a lot wrong with an album of over an hour running time. DAWN OF DESTINY, however, do everything right. „Of Silence“ offers an hour of variety without drifting into monotony, yet always following a common thread. The band manages to make the album seem compact and from one cast and still entertain over the entire distance. „Of Silence“ is not something you just listen to on the side, the songs demand attention and rigorously demand it. Not every song ignites equally, but the vast majority captivates with widescreen refrains and musical craftsmanship. Here, even those who, like me, are rather deterred by the predicate „Symphonic Metal“ may grab, because this label makes only a small part of the fazettenreichen album.
