Regelmässige Leserinnen meiner Reviews wissen, dass mein musikalisches Spektrum relativ breit ist. So bin ich einerseits bekennender Melodic Death Metal Fan, andererseits holt mich gut gemachter Punk oder Alternative ebenso ab wie balladiger Hardrock. Das ist bestimmt auch meinem Alter geschuldet, schliesslich nehme ich die Musikwelt seit gut fünfzig Jahren wahr. Andererseits bin ich aber auch überzeugt davon, dass einem viel gute Musik entgeht, wenn man sich zu stark innerhalb gewohnter Genrebahnen bewegt.
Nun, das Debutalbum des aus North Bay, Ontario stammenden Cory Marks ist so eine Scheibe, die man auf keinen Fall unterschätzen darf. Indizien gefällig?
Marks hat mit zehn Jahren Schlagzeug gespielt und sich besonders über DEEP PURPLE, OZZY oder RUSH hergemacht.
Gleichzeitig hat er bei den Platten seiner Eltern Country gehört und ist ein Verehrer von WAYLON „Waymore“ JENNINGS, seines Zeichens bedeutendster „Outlaw“-Country-Sänger neben WILLIE NELSON.
Auf seinem Debutalbum sind unter Anderem IVAN MOODY von 5FDP, TRAVIS TRITT und MICK MARS von MÖTLEY CRÜE sowie LZZY HALE von HALESTORM dabei.
Wenn das nicht auf ein cooles Album hindeutet, dann weiss ich nicht. Also flugs reingehört!
Inklusive den beiden Bonustracks „She’s Hollywood“ und „My Whiskey, Your Wine“ finden sich elf weitere Tracks auf dem Album. Und da kennt Marks keine Berührungsängste. So ist „Devil’s Grin“ eine typische Southern Rock-Nummer mit viel Drive. Ähnlich, aber noch ein Stück stärker ist „Outlaws&Outsiders“. Nicht umsonst ist das die erste Singleauskopplung, die auf den einschlägigen Rockradios zum Tagesgeschäft gehört und sich auf Platz 10 im US Active Rock Radio festsetzen konnte.
„Good To Be Us“ ist dann sowas wie eine „normale“ Rocknummer wie wir sie von seinen Landsleuten von NICKELBACK kennen – nur geiler, weil ungeschliffener!
„Blame It On The Double“ ist einer jener Hammertracks, den Marks zusammen mit seinem Produzenten Kevin Churko und seinem Sohn Kane geschrieben hat.
ein typischer Song aus der Geschichtenerzähler-Ecke ist „Another Night In Jail“. Der Song ist episch, nimmt einen mit und verleitet zum ekstatischen Absatzwippen an der Bar – grossartig.
„Who I Am“, beinahe die Frage aller Fragen, country based und im Stil seiner Outlaw-Vorbilder JENNINGS und NELSON geschrieben – allerdings mit etwas mehr Wumms, mehr Druck, mehr Rock.
So könnte ich jetzt alle Songs durchgehen und zu jedem etwas Positives und vor allem etwas Unterschiedliches erzählen. Kein Song gleicht dem anderen, von Country mit Steelguitar bis zum Rockbrett, Cory Marks lässt nichts aus.
Unbedingt anhören muss man sich „My Whiskey, Your Wine“, eine Countryballade vom Besten oder „Drive“, ein Hookliner der Sonderklasse.
Ganz bestimmt etwas vom Besten auf dem Album ist „Out In The Rain“ – oder habt ihr gewusst, dass LZZY Hale eine verdammte Countrystimme hat? Dieser Track bringt zwei Stimmen zusammen, welche das Positivste der amerikanischen/kanadischen Musikkultur zusammenbringen. Das Mädel klingt rattenscharf, Marks total abgeklärt. Verdammt ja, der Song schrammt hart am Kitsch vorbei, ist aber so voller Power, so intensiv, dass Gänsehaut unabdingbar ist. Einziger Nachteil – die Chance, diesen Song mit den Beiden live zu erleben, dürfte gegen null tendieren.
Fazit
Ich denke, CORY MARKS hat mit diesem Album einen Fehler gemacht – wie zum Teufel will er das mit den folgenden Alben toppen? Die Scheibe ist stark, abwechslungsreich, absolut perfekt produziert – der Redneck hat keine Fehler gemacht. Für mich eines der besten Alben dieses Jahres, wert zu kaufen und immer wieder zu hören. Und wenn Corona gnädig ist, werden wir den Kameraden hoffentlich bald auf europäischen Bühnen sehen und hören können. Freut euch auf den 07.08.2020!

Regular readers of my reviews know that my musical spectrum is relatively broad. So on the one hand I am a self-confessed Melodic Death Metal fan, on the other hand well done Punk or Alternative as well as balladic Hardrock pick me up. This is probably also due to my age, after all I have been aware of the music world for a good fifty years. On the other hand, I’m convinced that a lot of good music escapes you if you move too much within the usual genre paths.
Well, the debut album of Cory Marks from North Bay, Ontario is one of those records that you should not underestimate. You want some clues?
Marks played drums when he was ten years old and was particularly fond of DEEP PURPLE, OZZY or RUSH.
At the same time he listened to country music on his parents‘ records and is an admirer of WAYLON „Waymore“ JENNINGS, the most important „outlaw“ country singer besides WILLIE NELSON.
His debut album features IVAN MOODY from 5FDP, TRAVIS TRITT and MICK MARS from MÖTLEY CRÜE and LZZY HALE from HALESTORM.
If that doesn’t suggest a cool album, then I don’t know. So listen up!
Including the two bonus tracks „She’s Hollywood“ and „My Whiskey, Your Wine“ there are eleven more tracks on the album. And Marks knows no fear of contact there. So „Devil’s Grin“ is a typical Southern Rock number with lots of drive. Similar, but even a bit stronger is „Outlaws&Outsiders“. It’s not for nothing that this is the first single release that is part of the day-to-day business on the relevant rock radios and has been able to establish itself at number 10 on US Active Rock Radio.
„Good To Be Us“ is then something like a „normal“ rock number as we know it from his fellow countrymen from NICKELBACK – only hornier, because it’s unpolished!
„Blame It On The Double“ is one of those hammer tracks that Marks wrote together with his producer Kevin Churko and his son Kane.
a typical song from the storyteller’s corner is „Another Night In Jail“. The song is epic, takes you away and tempts you to ecstatic heel-swagging at the bar – great.
„Who I Am“, almost the question of all questions, country based and written in the style of his outlaw idols JENNINGS and NELSON – but with a bit more bang, more pressure, more rock.
So now I could go through all the songs and say something positive and above all something different to everyone. No two songs are the same, from country with steelguitar to rock, Cory Marks leaves nothing out.
You must listen to „My Whiskey, Your Wine“, a country ballad of the best or „Drive“, a hookliner of the special class.
Definitely some of the best on the album is „Out In The Rain“ – or did you know that LZZY Hale has a fucking country voice? This track brings together two voices that bring together the most positive aspects of American/Canadian musical culture. The girl sounds hot as hell, Marks is totally mellow. Damn yes, the song scratches hard on the kitsch, but is so full of power, so intense that goose bumps are inevitable. The only disadvantage – the chance to experience this song live with the two of them should be close to zero.
Conclusion
I think CORY MARKS has made a mistake with this album – how the hell does he want to top that with the following albums? The record is strong, varied, absolutely perfectly produced – the redneck didn’t make any mistakes. For me one of the best albums of this year, worth buying and listening to over and over again. And if Corona is gracious, we will hopefully be able to see and hear the comrade soon on European stages. Look forward to the 07.08.2020!
