BOB DYLAN – „Rough And Rowdy Ways“ – wie guter Wein

Wer nicht weiss, was BOB DYLAN für die Musikwelt bedeutet, ist einerseits zu spät geboren und andererseits in einer musikalischen Wüste aufgewachsen.

Zur Erinnerung; BOB DYLAN war eine der zentralen Figuren auf WOODSTOCK, er hat die letzten sechzig Jahre die Musikwelt beeinflusst wie kaum ein zweiter Musiker und er ist der erste Sänger, der 2016 den Nobelpreis für Literatur erhalten hat – den er notabene erst drei Monate nach der Verleihung abgeholt hat.
Robert Allen Zimmermann wurde 1941 geboren, spielt seit 1989 die „Never Ending Tour“ und gilt als der Mann, der „den Folk mit dem Rock ins Bett gezwungen hat“.
Dylan hat nicht weniger als 39 Studioalben veröffentlicht, 11 Liveplatten und 14 mal „Best Of“ oder Greatest Hits“. Schlicht Kult ist seine „Bootlegs“-Serie, eine Reihe von dreizehn Alben zwischen 1991 und 2019 mit unveröffentlichtem Archivmaterial, die lange Zeit nicht oder wirklich nur als Bootlegs erhältlich waren. Als kleine Anmerkung an die Youtube-Generation; Bootlegs sind Liveaufnahmen, welche oft illegalerweise an Konzerten gemacht wurden – meist in besserer Soundqualität als viele Youtube-Konzertvideos von heute. Und 1991 gab es definitiv noch keine Smartphones.
Was man von DYLAN zwingend kennen muss? „A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall „, „Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door“, „Blowin‘ In The Wind, „The Times They Are a-Changin'“ oder „Like A Rolling Stone“, das vom gleichnamigen Musikmagazin als „Greatest Song Of All Times“ gewählt wurde.

Ja, das neue Album ist gross, bewegend und vollständig aus der Zeit gefallen. Die Scheibe biedert sich nicht an, will keinen neuen BOB DYLAN zeigen – nicht zuletzt, weil der alte, der beständige BOB DYLAN gross und bedeutend genug ist.
„Rough And Rowdy Ways“ schert sich keinen Deut darum, was heute angesagt, was modern ist – es ist schlicht und einfach geniale Musik, zeitlos und so nur von wenigen Musikern zu verwirklichen. TOM WAITS, LEONARD COHEN. LOU REED oder NICK CAVE – es gibt nur wenige männliche Sänger und Songwriter, welche DYLAN einigermassen das Wasser reichen können – keiner von ihnen hat nur annähernd so viel Musik geschrieben.
„Rough And Rowdy Ways“ ist das Meisterwerk eines alten, weissen Mannes, eines politischen Sängers, eines Menschen, der immer Stellung bezogen hat, zu seinen Überzeugungen gestanden ist – und in seinem Leben viele Irrwege gegangen ist. Aber genau diese Irrungen und Wirrungen machen ihn aus und ermöglichen ihm, ein dermassen grossartiges Album zu schreiben.
Wer sich nicht darauf einlassen will, wer nicht bereit ist, Texte als zentralen Bestandteil jedes Songs zu akzeptieren, der sollte die Platte nicht kaufen. „Rough And Rowdy Ways“ ist unaufgeregt, die meisten Tracks getragen und melancholisch, einzig „Goodbye Jimmy Reed“ kommt als Jump Blues um die Ecke und ist gespickt mit sexuellen Anspielungen, die man so von DYLAN nicht gewohnt ist.
Frech und schlichtweg genial ist „Murder Most Foul“. Es ist ein beinahe siebzehnminütiges Erzählstück, ein ungemein melancholischer und gleichzeitig humorvoller Song eines Mannes, der Rückschau hält auf ein Leben, das so unglaublich reich ist, dass es stellvertretend stehen kann für die Zeit nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg. Dylan greift in die Vollen, singt über die schreckliche Ermordung Kennedys und setzt dabei Zitate auf „Nightmare On Elm Street“, auf den Rock’N’Roll – DJ „Wolfman Jack“, auf Marylin Monroe, auf die Beatles und seinen eigenen Song „Only The Good Die Young“ oder „In God We Trust“, dieses verlogene amerikanische Bekenntnis, welche die Dollarnote ziert. Untermalt wird die Geschichte durch einen beinahe cineastischen Soundtrack, DYLANs Stimme erzählt mehr, als dass er singt. Seine Stimme ist älter geworden und bleibt dennoch charakteristisch. vereint das gewohnte, leichte Nuscheln, den Reibeisenklang ebenso wie ein schmeichelndes Timbre in seiner Baritonlage.
„False Prophet“ knüpft ein wenig an DYLANY Rockzeiten an, klingt gleichzeitig wie der Hintergrundblues aus einem Südstaatenpuff – so zumindest stelle ich mir das mangels eigener Erfahrung vor.
Und genau darum geht es auch – zumindest im übertragenen Sinn:

Fazit

Wenn einer, der mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert Musikgeschichte prägte, nach fast acht Jahren wieder ein Album liefert, wachsen die Erwartungen beinahe in den Himmel – besonders, wenn er BOB DYLAN heisst. Ich sage; so hoch die Erwartungen auch lagen – „Rough And Rowdy Ways“ haben sie mehr als erfüllt. DYLANS musikalisches Schaffen ist so bedeutend, dass es kein „bestes Album“ geben kann und sprachlich kennen wir keinen wirklichen Begriff für viele verschiedenen „bestes Album“. Wie auch immer, „Rough And Rowdy Ways“ ist eines dieser „bestes Album“ – ever!

Yes, the new album is big, moving and completely out of time. The record doesn’t offer itself, doesn’t want to show a new BOB DYLAN – not least because the old, enduring BOB DYLAN is big and important enough.
„Rough And Rowdy Ways“ doesn’t care a bit about what’s hip and modern today – it’s simply brilliant music, timeless and so only to be realized by a few musicians. TOM WAITS, LEONARD COHEN. LOU REED or NICK CAVE – there are only a few male singers and songwriters who can hold a candle to DYLAN – none of them has written anywhere near as much music.
„Rough And Rowdy Ways“ is the masterpiece of an old, white man, a political singer, a person who always took a stand, stood by his convictions – and went many wrong ways in his life. But it’s exactly these errors and confusions that make him what he is and enable him to write such a great album.
If you don’t want to get involved, if you’re not willing to accept lyrics as a central part of every song, you shouldn’t buy the record. „Rough And Rowdy Ways“ is unagitated, most of the tracks are worn and melancholic, only „Goodbye Jimmy Reed“ comes around the corner as Jump Blues and is peppered with sexual innuendoes that you are not used to from DYLAN.
Cheeky and simply brilliant is „Murder Most Foul“. It’s an almost seventeen-minute-long narrative piece, an incredibly melancholic and at the same time humorous song by a man who looks back on a life that is so incredibly rich that it can be representative for the time after World War II. Dylan reaches into the full, singing about the terrible murder of Kennedy and thereby quotes from „Nightmare On Elm Street“, the rock’n’roll DJ „Wolfman Jack“, Marylin Monroe, the Beatles and his own song „Only The Good Die Young“ or „In God We Trust“, this mendacious American confession that adorns the dollar bill. The story is accompanied by an almost cinematic soundtrack, DYLAN’s voice tells more than he sings. His voice has grown older and yet remains characteristic. combines the usual light mumbling, the grater sound as well as a flattering timbre in his baritone register.
„False Prophet“ ties in a little with DYLANY rock times, sounds at the same time like the background blues from a southern states whorehouse – at least that’s how I imagine it, due to lack of personal experience.
And that’s exactly what it’s all about – at least figuratively speaking:

conclusion

When someone who has shaped more than half a century of music history delivers an album again after almost eight years, expectations almost skyrocket – especially if his name is BOB DYLAN. I say; as high as the expectations were – „Rough And Rowdy Ways“ more than fulfilled them. DYLAN’s musical work is so important that there can be no „best album“ and linguistically we know no real term for many different „best album“. However, „Rough And Rowdy Ways“ is one of those „best albums“ – ever!
