BLACKRAIN – „Untamed“ schlägt auf – und ein?

Französische Bands der härteren Genres haben bei uns einen relativ harten Stand, was die Bekanntheit und Präsenz anbelangt – das gilt auch für BLACKRAIN trotz sechs Alben und zwanzig Jahre im Geschäft.

Swan Hellion – Gitarre und Gesang, Max 2 – Leadgitarre, Matthieu de la Roche – Bass und Frank F – Drums, so gestaltet sich das Lineup der Truppe aus der Gegend um Annecy, nahe der Schweizer Grenze am Genfersee. Seit 2001 sind die Jungs im Business, mit „Untamed“ erscheint ihr sechstes Album, ihr Leistungsausweis? Tours mit EUROPE, ALICE COOPER, SCORPIONS oder STEEL PANTHER sind eigentlich eine gute Empfehlung, oder?

Nichts destotrotz hat die Band im deutschsprachigen, europäischen Raum noch nicht die grosse Aufmerksamkeit gefunden. Liegt es an der Musik, an den Produktionen? Mit „Untamed“ liefern die Franzosen ein Dutzend Tracks, welche verschiedene Handschriften tragen. Mit „Summer Jesus“ heben sie ALICE COOPER auf den Schild, die Hookliner schlechthin liefern die Franzosen mit „Demon“ und „Dawn Of Hell“ ab – die Songs haben durchaus Hitpotenzial. Der Titeltrack „Untamed“ erinnert im Riffing und dem Tempo sehr stark an AIRBOURNE – „Ready To Rock“ lässt grüssen. Und das ist es vielleicht, was das Album nicht vollständig überzeugen lässt. Klar, jeder der zwölf Songs ist handwerklich sehr gut gemachter Hairmetal, geht in die Beine, wird die Genrefreunde durchaus erfreuen. Zudem kommt die Handschrift von KISSIN DYNAMITE – Fronter Hannes Braun durch, der sich als Produzent eingebracht hat. Die Bands kennen sich seit Jahren, haben schon öfter die Bühnen geteilt und sind heute eng befreundet. Diese Handschrift wiederum bringt die Savoyer auch recht nahe an den Sound der Deutschen. Es sind diese Anleihen, welche beim Album etwas vermissen lassen, das vielleicht auch den grossen Durchbruch der Band erschwert – ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal!

Fazit

„Untamed“ ist ein Album ohne Schwächen, die Tracks sind musikalisch und technisch sehr gut gemacht, Sänger Swan Hellion überzeugt durchaus mit seiner kraftvollen Stimme. Mir fehlt insgesamt aber die Eigenständigkeit, welche das Album aus dem Durchschnitt guten Glamrocks hervorhebt. Nichts destotrotz – ein gutes Album, das man den Hair, Glam, Sleaze und Leggins – Rockern direkt ans Herz legen kann – die Scheibe macht durchaus Spass und Lust auf Live-Gigs.

Swan Hellion – guitar and vocals, Max 2 – lead guitar, Matthieu de la Roche – bass and Frank F – drums, that’s the line-up of the band from the Annecy area, near the Swiss border on Lake Geneva. The guys have been in the business since 2001, with „Untamed“ their sixth album is released, their track record? Tours with EUROPE, ALICE COOPER, SCORPIONS or STEEL PANTHER are actually a good recommendation, right?

Nevertheless, the band has not yet attracted much attention in German-speaking Europe. Is it because of the music, the productions? With „Untamed“, the French deliver a dozen tracks that bear different signatures. With „Summer Jesus“ they put ALICE COOPER on the map, the French deliver the hookliners par excellence with „Demon“ and „Dawn Of Hell“ – the songs definitely have hit potential. The title track „Untamed“ is very reminiscent of AIRBOURNE in its riffing and tempo – „Ready To Rock“ sends its regards. And maybe that’s what makes the album not completely convincing. Sure, each of the twelve songs is very well crafted hair metal, gets into your legs, will definitely please genre fans. In addition, the signature of KISSIN DYNAMITE frontman Hannes Braun comes through, who has contributed as a producer. The bands have known each other for years, have often shared stages and are now close friends. This signature in turn brings the Savoy quite close to the sound of the Germans. It is these borrowings that leave something missing from the album, which perhaps also hinders the band’s big breakthrough – a unique selling point!

Conclusion

„Untamed“ is an album without weaknesses, the tracks are musically and technically very well done, singer Swan Hellion is quite convincing with his powerful voice. But all in all, I feel that the album lacks the independence that would make it stand out from the average of good glam rock. Nevertheless, this is a good album that can be recommended to hair, glam, sleaze and leggings rockers – the album is a lot of fun and makes you want to go to live gigs.
