BLACK SWAN – „Generation Mind“ must have!
JA, ich hab’s wieder einmal vergeigt. Aber was kann ich dafür, wenn soviel Material auf meinem digitalen Schreibtisch aufschlägt?

Wenn täglich zwischen zehn und fünfzehn Promoscheiben reinflattern, dann kommt es schon mal vor, dass auch Perlen untergehen. Und BLACK SWAN sind definitiv eine dieser Perlen. Und was für eine. Diese Band darf sich Supergroup nennen: Vocalist Robin McAuley (McAuley Schenker Group), Gitarrist Reb Beach (Winger, Whitesnake), Bassist Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, The End Machine, ex-Dokken), und Drummer Matt Starr (Ace Frehley, Mr. Big) sind schliesslich lauter Grössen im Business. Und wenn man die einzelnen Mitstreiter so auch nicht kennt – die Bands dahinter haben auf jeden Fall Kultcharakter.
Jetzt haben die gestandenen Rocker ihr zweites Album „Generation Mind“ veröffentlicht. Die Erwartungen nach ihrem erfolgreichen Debut „Shake The World“ waren hoch – und wurden meiner Meinung nach übertroffen.
Klar, von einer Band dieses Kalibers erwarte ich kein schlechtes Album – dazu ist der Leistungsausweis der Musiker, sind ihre Fähigkeiten einfach zu gut. Die Herausforderung bei einem solchen Projekt liegt aber woanders. Wie wird aus guten, sehr guten Einzelkämpfern eine Band zusammen zu schweissen? Man müsste die Jungs direkt selber fragen. Gelungen ist es auf jeden Fall. Die Band klingt kompakt, eine musikalische Einheit, grossartige Technik, ein Zusammenschluss wirklich grossartiger Musiker – mit einem nicht weniger genialen Songwriting.
Robin McAuley hat natürlich einen zentralen Part, ebenso grandios ist aber die Saitenarbeit von Reb Reach – und dass eine Band ohne ihre Powerline aus Bass und Drums sowieso nichts taugen, wissen wir alle.
Wenn ich zehn Punkte vergebe, kann man erwarten, dass das Album ohne Schwächen ist. Ist so, ausser man mag das Genre nicht. Mit „Generation Mind“ haben die Jungs bereits einen Klassiker geschaffen, der es mir schwer macht, Anspieltipps herauszulesen.
Ich versuche es trotzdem. Für einmal gehört der gut einminütige Opener dazu – so muss eine Sologitarre klingen können – wenige Töne, dafür jeder klar und sauber gesetzt – es braucht nicht immer Saitenmasturbation (ich trau mich nicht, öffentlich Gewichse zu schreiben…). Ebenfalls überragend finde ich „Eagles Fly“ – ein Rockbrett mit ordentlich Dampf und Metall – die Nummer würde glatt auch instrumental genügen.
Gut gefällt mir auch „Miracle“ , eine Midtemponummer mit viel Druck, der charismatischen Stimme von McAuley und sehr guter Gitarrenarbeit. Für einmal dominiert hier der Bass, gibt ein mehr als stabiles Fundament und ist hauptverantwortlich für den Druck.
Wie es sich für Rocker mit diesem Background gehört, darf auch eine Ballade nicht fehlen. Eingelöst wird das mit „How Do You Feel“, einem absoluten Hookliner. Holt die Feuerzeuge raus oder meinetwegen die Handy-Taschen-Lampen.
Fazit
„Generation Mind“ von Black Swan hat meine Erwartungen übertroffen, obwohl sie nach dem Debut wirklich hoch waren. Das Album wird dieses Jahr im Bereich Hardrock einen der vorderen Plätze beim besten Album belegen – das scheint mir bereits klar.
Freunde des gepflegten Hardrock – die Scheibe müsst ihr euch zulegen, wenn eure Sammlung ernstzunehmen sein soll.

When between ten and fifteen promo discs flutter in every day, it sometimes happens that even pearls get lost. And BLACK SWAN is definitely one of those pearls. And what a pearl. This band can call itself a supergroup: Vocalist Robin McAuley (McAuley Schenker Group), guitarist Reb Beach (Winger, Whitesnake), bassist Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, The End Machine, ex-Dokken), and drummer Matt Starr (Ace Frehley, Mr. Big) are all big names in the business. And even if you do not know the individual comrades-in-arms – the bands behind them have cult character in any case.
Now the seasoned rockers have released their second album „Generation Mind“. The expectations after their successful debut „Shake The World“ were high – and were exceeded in my opinion.
Clearly, from a band of this caliber I do not expect a bad album – for this, the track record of the musicians, their skills are simply too good. But the challenge in such a project lies elsewhere. How do you weld a band together from good, very good individual fighters? You would have to ask the guys themselves. It was successful in any case. The band sounds compact, a musical unit, great technique, a union of really great musicians – with a no less ingenious songwriting.
Robin McAuley has of course a central part, but equally terrific is the string work of Reb Reach – and that a band without their powerline of bass and drums anyway no good, we all know.
When I give ten points, you can expect the album to be without weaknesses. Is so, unless you do not like the genre. With „Generation Mind“ the guys have already created a classic, which makes it difficult for me to pick out Anspieltipps.
I’ll try anyway. For once, the good one-minute opener belongs to it – so a solo guitar must be able to sound – few notes, but each clearly and cleanly set – it does not always need string masturbation (I do not dare to write publicly weight…). Also outstanding I find „Eagles Fly“ – a rock board with proper steam and metal – the number would suffice even instrumental.
Good I also like „Miracle“ , a midtempo number with a lot of pressure, the charismatic voice of McAuley and very good guitar work. For once, the bass dominates here, gives a more than stable foundation and is mainly responsible for the pressure.
As it should be for rockers with this background, a ballad may not be missing. This is redeemed with „How Do You Feel“, an absolute hookliner. Get out the lighters or, for my sake, the cell phone pocket lights.
Conclusion
„Generation Mind“ by Black Swan has exceeded my expectations, although they were really high after the debut. The album will occupy one of the front places in the best album this year in the field of hard rock – that already seems clear to me.
Friends of cultivated hard rock – you have to get the disc if your collection is to be taken seriously.
