Schon klar, wo Zakk Wylde und seine Jungs loslegen, wächst kein Gras mehr. Das neue Album „Doom Crew Inc.“ liegt voll in dieser Tradition.

Man kann es drehen und wenden, wie man will – ZAKK WYLDE ist ein absolut genialer Songwriter und Instrumentalist. Ob er solo auftritt oder mit seinen Kumpels von der BLACK LABEL SOCIETY macht dabei keinen Unterschied.
Wer BLS einfach als „Heavy Metal Band“ bezeichnet, schiesst definitiv zu kurz. Der ehemalige Gitarrist von OZZY OSBOURNE hat sich seine musikalischen Sporen längst abverdient, braucht niemandem mehr etwas zu beweisen.
Spannend finde ich immer wieder – Wylde klingt beim Singen ähnlich wie Ozzy, obwohl er eine völlig andere Stimmfarbe hat…
Auf diesem Album tauscht Zakk Soli und Twin-Guitar-Parts mit Dario Lorina aus, unterstützt von seinem langjährigen Bassisten John „J.D.“ DeServio und dem kraftvollen Schlagzeuger Jeff Fabb.
Was genau hat das Album aber zu bieten? Was hat mich dazu gebracht, hier die volle Punktzahl zu verteilen? Zum Einen schafft es Wylde einmal mehr, ein kreatives und abwechslungsreiches Album zu schreiben und mit seinen Jungs einzuspielen – welche bekanntermassen alle Meister ihres Faches sind. Zum Anderen braucht er sich nicht neu zu erfinden, um sich stetig weiter zu entwickeln, seine Musik von Album zu Album auf ein neues Level zu heben.
Beispiele gefällig? Nehmen wir doch den Einstig „Set You Free“ ins Album – was hier mit sanftem Gitarrenpicking beginnt, entwickelt sich innert Kürze in eine fette Metalhymne, eine Art Powerballade, geprägt vom treibenden Groove der Rhythmussektion, darüber gelegt die – im klassischen Verständnis – doomige Stimme des Meisters. Dass er dann wie selbstverständlich einige Soloparts einflicht, wen wundert es? Wylde gehört zu jenen Gitarristen, welche sowohl Soli mit wenigen, punktgenau gesetzten Tönen ebenso versteht wie hyperschnelle Gewitterkaskaden.
„Destroy & Conquer“ ist dann eher die stossende Metalvariante, aufgesetzt auf einem Hardrockfundament mit bluesigem, richtig fettem Solo. Wie in der Mehrheit der Songs arbeiten BLS mit Tempowechseln, Breakdowns, wie wir sie auch im „modernen Doom“ kennen, einfach besser. Wylde’s Doom – darauf lässt auch der Titel schliessen – bezieht sich auf den Sound, welchen BLACK SABBATH quasi erfunden haben.
Mit „Love Reign Down“ machen BLS das, was sie ebenfalls genial können – eine Ballade, die ihresgleichen sucht. Und so liesse sich der Reigen bei sämtlichen Tracks fortsetzen, da alle schlicht und einfach gut sind.
Fazit
Das Album hat keine Schwächen. Es ist das Produkt eines der weltbesten, genialsten Songwriter und Musiker gemeinsam mit seiner musikalisch und technisch hochkarätigen Band. BLACK LABEL SOCIETY sind eine Band, welche noch viel beliebter, bekannter sein sollte, als sie es eh schon sind. Empfehlung? Wenn du dir dieses Album entgehen lässt – selber schuld! Definitiv kaufen!

You can spin it any way you want – ZAKK WYLDE is an absolutely brilliant songwriter and instrumentalist. Whether he performs solo or with his buddies from BLACK LABEL SOCIETY makes no difference.
Whoever calls BLS simply a „heavy metal band“ is definitely shooting too short. The former guitarist of OZZY OSBOURNE has long since earned his musical spurs, no longer needing to prove anything to anyone.
I always find it exciting – Wylde sounds similar to Ozzy when he sings, although he has a completely different vocal colour…
On this album, Zakk trades solos and twin guitar parts with Dario Lorina, backed by his long-time bassist John „J.D.“ DeServio and powerful drummer Jeff Fabb.
But what exactly does the album have to offer? What made me give it full marks here? For one thing, Wylde once again manages to write a creative and varied album and record it with his boys – who are all known to be masters of their craft. On the other hand, he doesn’t need to reinvent himself in order to keep developing, to raise his music to a new level from album to album.
Examples? Let’s take the introduction „Set You Free“ into the album – what starts here with gentle guitar picking soon develops into a fat metal anthem, a kind of power ballad, characterised by the driving groove of the rhythm section, overlaid with the – in the classical understanding – doomy voice of the master. It’s no surprise that he then adds a few solo parts as a matter of course. Wylde is one of those guitarists who understands solos with few, precisely placed notes as well as hyper-fast thunderstorm cascades.
„Destroy & Conquer“ is then rather the thrusting metal variant, built on a hard rock foundation with a bluesy, really fat solo. As in the majority of the songs BLS work with tempo changes, breakdowns, as we also know them in „modern doom“, just better. Wylde’s Doom – as the title suggests – refers to the sound that BLACK SABBATH invented.
With „Love Reign Down“, BLS do what they also do brilliantly – a ballad that is second to none. And so the list could be continued with all the tracks, as they are all simply good.
Conclusion
The album has no weaknesses. It is the product of one of the world’s best, most brilliant songwriters and musicians together with his musically and technically top-class band. BLACK LABEL SOCIETY are a band that should be even more popular and well known than they already are. Recommendation? If you miss this album – it’s your own fault! Definitely buy it!
