Album Nummer fünf in sieben Jahren – Jennifer Haben und ihre Jungs sind ganz schön fleissig. Taugt das selbstbetitelte Album auch was?

Was habe ich erwartet? Was kann man erwarten? Wie hoch dürfen Erwartungen und Ansprüche an BEYOND THE BLACK sein? Ich finde, sehr hoch! Schliesslich ist Jennifer Haben eine richtig, richtig gute Sängerin, die um sich eine Truppe exzellenter Musiker gesammelt hat. Also werde ich mit dem Album ziemlich hart ins Gericht gehen – weichgespülte „nett-sein“-Reviews gibt es schon genug. Und Jennifer Haben, wie ich sie 2017 kennenlernen durfte, ist selbstbewusst genug. Das hat sie gezeigt, als sie 2016 gerade einmal die Band auflöste und vollständig neu besetzte – sie war damals gerade süsse 21. Jetzt besteht die süddeutsche Band nicht nur aus der Frontfrau, an Gitarren und Backgroundgesang unterstützen sie Chris Hermsdörfer und Tobias Lodes, die Drums spielt Kai Tschierschky.
Und das Album? 42 Minuten Spielzeit, 10 Tracks, selftitled und das rote Cover mit den Bandkonterfeis geschmückt soviel zu den Formalien. Musikalisch steckt BEYOND THE BLACK drin, wo BEYOND THE BLACK draufsteht. Die beiden bereits ausgekoppelten und von den Radios abgefeierten Singles „Reincarnation“ und „Is There Anybody Out There?“ gehören zu den Hooklinern. Aus Sicht von Band und Label dürften es auch die besseren Tracks sein – warum sollte man sie sonst vorab veröffentlichen? Meine sind es nicht, also nicht nur. Die Powerballade „Wide Awake“ hat es mir deutlich stärker angetan – dieser Folkeinschlag steht der Band gut, der Haben’schen Stimme sowieso. Dann wäre da noch das Brett „Not In Our Name“ – klar, klingt ein wenig wie NIGHTWISH, aber was soll’s? BTB werden den Symphonic Metallern eh immer zugeordnet, in ihre Nähe gerückt oder in jene von WITHIN TEMPTATION. Greift aber zu kurz, ausser symphonischem Metal und einer Frau am Mikro sind da nicht soo viele Gemeinsamkeiten. Beispielsweise singt Jennifer Haben rockiger, härter und meiner Meinung nach variabler als die beiden anderen Frontfrauen. Das „klassische“ Timbre dringt weniger durch.
Ups, da wären wir gleich beim ersten Punkt, der meine Erwartungen nicht erfüllt hat – die Scheibe ist zu wenig hart, eindeutig! Da kommt nicht so richtig das Metalfeeling auf – ist für mich übrigens bei den vorgenannten Kapellen auch so. Ist Symphonic Metal vielleicht kein Metal mehr? Eher Rock? Oder einfach zu melodisch? Oder überhaupt? Ich versteige mich jetzt mal kurz; vielleicht ist der Druck auf Radiotauglichkeit halt grösser, als wir alle annehmen? Wer also über Rockantenne hinaus gespielt werden will, muss halt gewisse Vorgaben erfüllen. So gesehen gehören BEYOND THE BLACK definitiv zum Härtesten, was im Mainstreamradio gespielt wird. Irgendwie ist BTB schon noch Metal, insgesamt ziemlich wuchtig, geiles Riffing und geile Soli und obendrauf diese Stimme – alle Ingredienzen sind da – mir fehlt etwas Dreck… irgend wie so wie BATTLE BEAST – ohne sie zu kopieren. Das haben BTB eh nicht nötig, sie spielen längst auf Augenhöhe, haben die Finnen überholt, was Bekanntheit und Medienpräsenz anbelangt. „Winter Is Coming“ und „into The Light“ gehen in die richtige Richtung, wirken etwas abgespeckt, etwas weniger orchestral – und packt mich genau damit – es geht doch!
Fazit
Also, Butter bei die Fische; ich hätte nett sein und dem Album 9 von 10 Punkten geben können. Ich hätte nicht einmal weit über meinen Schatten springen müssen. Aber ich habe halt etwas mehr erwartet, hätte mir etwas mehr Druck in der Magengrube gewünscht, etwas weniger Zuckerguss. Aber; das Album ist gelungen, spielt auf gewohntem und erwartet hohem Niveau – es gehört in jede ernstzunehmende Rock- und Metalsammlung weit über die Fanbase hinaus. Wer also einen gelungenen Einstieg ins Musikshopping 2023 sucht – unbedingt kaufen!

What did I expect? What can be expected? How high can expectations and demands on BEYOND THE BLACK be? I think very high! After all, Jennifer Haben is a really, really good singer who has gathered a troupe of excellent musicians around her. So I’m going to be pretty hard on the album – there are already enough soft-soap „nice to be“ reviews. And Jennifer Haben, as I had the pleasure of meeting her in 2017, is confident enough. She showed that when she just broke up the band in 2016 and completely recast it – she was just a sweet 21 at the time. Now the southern German band consists not only of the front woman, Chris Hermsdörfer and Tobias Lodes support her on guitars and background vocals, Kai Tschierschky plays the drums.
And the album? 42 minutes playing time, 10 tracks, selftitled and the red cover adorned with the band’s likenesses, so much for the formalities. Musically, BEYOND THE BLACK is in it, where BEYOND THE BLACK is on it. The two singles „Reincarnation“ and „Is There Anybody Out There?“, which have already been released and celebrated by the radios, are among the hookliners. From the band’s and label’s point of view, they should also be the better tracks – why else release them in advance? Mine are not, so not only. The power ballad „Wide Awake“ is much more appealing to me – this folk touch suits the band well, Haben’s voice anyway. Then there’s „Not In Our Name“ – sure, it sounds a bit like NIGHTWISH, but so what? BTB are always assigned to the symphonic metallers anyway, brought close to them or WITHIN TEMPTATION. But this is not enough, apart from symphonic metal and a woman at the microphone there are not so many similarities. For example, Jennifer Haben sings rockier, harder and in my opinion more variable than the other two front women. The „classic“ timbre comes through less.
Oops, here we are at the first point that didn’t meet my expectations – the disc is not hard enough, definitely! It doesn’t really have that metal feeling – which, by the way, is also the case for me with the aforementioned bands. Is Symphonic Metal perhaps no longer Metal? More rock? Or just too melodic? Or at all? Maybe the pressure to be radio-friendly is greater than we all assume? So if you want to be played beyond Rockantenne, you have to fulfil certain requirements. From this point of view, BEYOND THE BLACK are definitely among the hardest things that are played on mainstream radio. Somehow BTB is still Metal, altogether pretty powerful and great riffing and great solos and on top of that this voice – all ingredients are there – I’m missing some dirt… something like BATTLE BEAST – without copying them. BTB don’t need to do that anyway, they’ve been playing on a par with the Finns for a long time now, they’ve overtaken them in terms of popularity and media presence. „Winter Is Coming“ and „into The Light“ go in the right direction, seem a bit more stripped down, a bit less orchestral – and that’s exactly what grabs me – it works!
Conclusion
So, butter to the fishes; I could have been nice and given the album 9 out of 10 points. I didn’t even have to jump far over my shadow. But I expected a bit more, I would have liked a bit more pressure in the pit of my stomach, a bit less icing. But; the album is successful, plays on the usual and expected high level – it belongs in every serious rock and metal collection far beyond the fanbase. So if you are looking for a successful entry into music shopping 2023 – definitely buy it!
