Behind The Scenes: Promoter

Behind The Scenes: Promoter

Eigentlich nimmt all dies den größten Teil meiner Zeit in Anspruch.

Today we continue with the profession of promoter or publicist in our series behind the scenes.

For regular readers of our website, Leo shouldn’t be a stranger, she is the embodiment of our German outposts, if you will. But also as a journalist and photographer for German print and online magazines as well as merchandiser and tour manager, she has many years of experience and at the age of 24, she is based at one of the most important addresses in metal, as promoter at Nuclear Blast in Donzdorf in Southern Germany.

As you may imagine, the typical workday does not exist in this form, but what it might theoretically look like and what is part of her duties, she shares with you in her own words.

„My day starts in the morning with checking the schedule for that day: What’s important? Is there a single, a video, a trailer or even an album to be released or announced today? If I haven’t done that yet, I prepare a PR for that and send it around to our social media team and offices abroad and coordinate the time with artist, management and our internal schedule. I try plan as ahead as possible and also check the forthcoming days to avoid last minute madness (what’s not always possible).

After that I work on some emails from journalists, artists, management regarding planning press releases and mailing-outs, agreeing on times and interview slots, confirming interviews, confirming and arranging guest list requests. Collecting interview and review scans and links to evaluate the album’s impact on the media. Actually, all this take most of my time. Sorry for all the people who dream of a glamorous jet set life partying with bands and spending most of the time at concerts – in the end, working as a promoter is an office job for the lion’s share.

But not only: For many releases, we also plan and organize listening sessions and press days either in Donzdorf or in other cities. For me, this means organizing the flights and hotel rooms for the band, journalists and me, scheduling the day and take care of the schedule.

Being present on the European festivals and organize interviews for our artists there is also part of our job. Of course I try to catch up with the concerts of our touring bands to have the chance and time to have a little chat face to face with them after most of our conversation happen online.

But for me the most interesting part of my work starts when it comes to starting work on a release, developing a story concept or creative concept together with digital team, product management and band/management. From there we work together on trailers, partnerships with media or other special actions to promote the album in the best possible way.“

As a fairly active person, the time spent in the office due to sitting for long periods does not correspond to her nature, but the job is more passion than work with many positive aspects.

„Working with great music and make sure that it gets heard by fans and journalists? Getting to know and communicating with wonderful and inspiring people in bands, managements and media? Just two examples and there are sooo many more. Hard to tell, what I enjoy the most.“
