BAD WOLVES – „N.A.T.I.O.N.“ am 25.10.19

Was aber erwartet euch beim neuen Album? Die Screampassagen in „No Messiah“ suchen ihresgleichen.
Ein sehr gutes Beispiel dafür ist der Opener „I’ll Be There“.

BAD WOLVES stand primarily for hard metal with a lot of first class core. And only in second line for the cover version of „Zombie“.

If you get attention as a band because you’re part of a horrible event, it’s never nice. JULI experienced this with their song „The Perfect Wave“; just that summer, when they released this song, the terrible tsunami happened in the Pacific and the song was played little or not for reasons of piety. Nothing destotrotz the song later became the biggest hit of the band.
similarly it happened to BAD WOLVES. The guys had a studio appointment with Dolores O’Riordan from the CRANBERRIES to record a cover of the hit „Zombie“. Exactly on this day O’Riordan was found in a hotel, drowned in a bathtub with an alcohol condolence. The band then decided to sing the track themselves and leave all the proceeds to the children of the CRANBERRIES front woman. Already after a few weeks that was a quarter of a million dollars. Until today the video on Youtube was clicked 226 million times.

Despite the whole prehistory, due guys have a good piece of life scars on their backs. They are driven by the former DEVILD DRIVERS drummer John Boecklin, the string men Chris Calin and Doc Coyle, Kyle Konkiel on bass, and finally the troupe could win the charismatic and talented Tommy Vext as singer. Vext originally comes from the hardcore scene of Brooklin, in my opinion he has one of the most powerful and impressive voices currently romping around in the core metal jungle. It’s no coincidence that he replaced Moody from the FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH when he once again needed a „medical intervention“ in 2017.

Already the band’s first album blew me away, so much power and creativity I hardly got on the hard drive in 2018.
Now the guys double up and add another shovel. Sure, there’s no overhit like the „Zombie“-Cover on the disc – but you couldn’t expect that either. After all, DISTURBED don’t have a second song that went through the ceiling like their cover of „Sound Of Silence“. Both songs are brilliantly interpreted, at least as good as the originals – but were already cult songs before.
What do you expect from the new album? First of all; at least as much power as „Disobey“. Tommy Vext convinces again with his voice, which surely carries through the melodic parts, but in no time at all sounds like we are used to from hardcore heroes. This enormous dynamic in singing characterizes the album. Vext is just as technically perfect as it is charismatic and delivers a special voice. Want an example? The scream passages in „No Messiah“ are unparalleled.
His comrades-in-arms build a musical building around it that is sometimes gentle and sometimes bretthart.
A very good example of this is the opener „I’ll Be There“. The basis is a double blast orgy, high-precision drum elements at all – they push and push forward and at the same time hold the whole work together. John Boecklin is a true master of his trade.
The string workers look similar. The riffs are fat, the bass lines crisp and punchy – every note sits well and everything harmonizes.
I also find the power ballad „Crying Game“ impressive, melodic passages are connected by incredibly powerful transitions. For me, the track has the same intensity as the „Zombie“ cover.

Conclusion

For me the album is by far the best record from this genre in the current year, I’ve flashed and could hear it up and down for hours. Of course I’m looking forward like a sparrow to see the guys live in two days and with a little luck to squeeze Tommy Vext. If you like Metalcore with a lot of energy, perfectly performed, it’s your own fault if you let the album go through your fingers. There is only one recommendation; buy, buy, buy!
