ARCH ENEMY – „Blood Dynasty“ erscheint am 28.03.25
Mein Anspruch ist hoch, sehr hoch, wenn ein neues Album einer meiner Lieblingsbands auf den Markt kommt.

Was dazukommt; seit ihrem Konzert in THE HALL Zürich bin ich angepisst, immer noch etwas nachtragend. Was fällt Alissa ein, sich während der drei ersten Songs in der zweiten Linie bei den Drums zu „verstecken“? Kaum waren wir Fotografen weg, werkelte die grandiose Sängerin wieder am Bühnenrand.
Selbstverständlich hindert mich das nicht daran, das neue Album der aktuell besten Melodic Death Band objektiv zu beurteilen – ziemlich objektiv zumindest. Das gleich vorneweg, Alissa White-Gluz, Joey Concepcion, Michael Amott, Sharlee D’Angelo und Daniel Erlandsson haben etwas gewagt, gehen durchaus neue Wege. Einige der Death Metal-Puristen mögen mit der einen oder anderen Sache etwas Mühe bekunden. Was AE beim letzten Album exzessiv machten – sämtliche Tracks wurden vor dem Erscheinen des Albums als Videos veröffentlicht – gestalten sie jetzt etwas zurückhaltender. Mit „Liars & Thieves“, „Paper Tiger“, „Dream Stealer“ und dem Titeltrack „Blood Dynasty“ sind vier Songs des Albums bekannt, den Besuchern der letzten Konzerte vielleicht noch der eine oder andere weitere Track. A propos Konzerte; diesen Frühling touren AE durch die USA, im Herbst weiter durch Europa beinahe 55 Konzerte im laufenden Jahr, allfällige Festivalauftritte im Sommer noch nicht mitgerechnet. Wobei, an dieser Front ist es bisher ziemlich ruhig…
Jetzt aber zur Mucke. ARCHE ENEMY geben den Fans auf jeden Fall, was den Fans gebührt. „Dream Stealer“ ist ein absolutes Brett, dasselbe gilt für „Paper Tiger“, „Liars & Thieves“ oder den Titeltrack „Blood Dynasty“. Alissa growlt dem Teufel ein Ohr ab und beweist erneut, dass sie mehr als auf der Höhe mit den männlichen Gutturalspezialisten wie etwa Johan Hegg oder Chrigel Glanzmann ist – gerade auch in den tiefen Lagen. Aber auch die Gitarrenarbeit von Amott und Conception sind grandios – und jene von Jeff Loomis, der auf einigen der Songs noch dabei ist. Ich bin immer noch traurig; Conception vermochte Loomis technisch wahrscheinlich zu ersetzen, sein Gitarrencharisma hat er (noch) nicht.
Screams gefällig? Selbstverständlich, allerdings wie gewohnt eingestreut im Wechsel mit den Growl-Passagen.
Clear? Klar doch – insbesondere bei jenem Track, den ich den „experimentellsten“ finde; „Vivre Libre“. Richtig gehört, Alissa singt französisch. Wobei das ja nicht erstaunen muss, schliesslich ist die Frau Kanadierein. „Vivre Libre“ ist ein Cover der französischen Band BLASPHEME von 1985. Und der Track wird gewissen Skeptikern, die schon lange vermuten, dass AE sich zu sehr dem Mainstream zuwenden – ein weiteres Argument liefern. Es stimmt schon; bei aller Power und Härte – AE haben sich in den letzten Jahren viel melodischer entwickelt, zeigen mehr Diversität in diesem Bereich. Möglicherweise geht das einher mit der Kreativität und Musikalität von Alissa White Gluz, welche jetzt gute zehn Jahre bei der Band singt. Die Sängerin beherrscht nicht nur Growl, Scream und Clear auf grandiosem Niveau, sie verfügt meiner Meinung nach momentan über die beste Stimme im Metal-Universum. Und sie ist kreativ in vielen Bereichen, lässt sich nicht einengen. Das scheint auch Mastermind Michael Amott zu akzeptieren. Mit gutem Grund, denn seit White Gluz bei ARCH ENEMY mittut, zeigt die Erfolgskurve der Band nur in eine Richtung; steil nach oben. Gäbe es Aktien, ich würde sie kaufen.
Fazit
Ich könnte jetzt noch mehr auf die Tracks eingehen, Anspieltipps definieren. Das ist aber nciht nötig, denn mit dem bereits veröffentlichten Material haben die Melodischen Metaller die Latte bereits so hoch gelegt, dass man sich fragen kann; erfüllt das Album die Erwartungen? Meine Meinung; ganz klar. Auf dem Niveau dieser Band wird es schwierig, sich zu steigern – ARCH ENEMY haben es mit „Blood Dynasty“ erneut geschafft – kaufen, auch wenn du bisher kein Fan bist!

I have high, very high expectations when a new album by one of my favourite bands comes out.
What’s more, I’ve been annoyed ever since their concert at THE HALL in Zurich, still a little resentful. What was Alissa thinking of, ‘hiding’ on the second line by the drums during the first three songs? No sooner were we photographers gone than the fantastic singer was back at the edge of the stage.
Of course, that doesn’t prevent me from objectively judging the new album of the currently best melodic death metal band – or at least quite objectively. That said, Alissa White-Gluz, Joey Concepcion, Michael Amott, Sharlee D’Angelo and Daniel Erlandsson have dared to do something, to break new ground. Some death metal purists may have some trouble with one thing or another. What AE did excessively on the last album – all tracks were released as videos before the album came out – they are now doing a bit more cautiously. With ‘Liars & Thieves’, ‘Paper Tiger’, ‘Dream Stealer’ and the title track ‘Blood Dynasty’, four songs from the album are known, and visitors to the last concerts may know one or two more tracks. Speaking of concerts, this spring AE are touring the US, and in autumn they will continue touring Europe – almost 55 concerts in the current year, not counting possible festival appearances in the summer. Although, on this front, it has been pretty quiet so far…
But now to the music. ARCHE ENEMY definitely give the fans what they want. ‘Dream Stealer’ is an absolute killer, the same goes for “Paper Tiger”, “Liars & Thieves” or the title track “Blood Dynasty”. Alissa growls like the devil and proves once again that she is more than a match for male guttural specialists such as Johan Hegg or Chrigel Glanzmann – especially in the low registers.
Screams, too? Of course, but as usual interspersed with the growl passages.
But the guitar work of Amott and Conception is also terrific – and that of Jeff Loomis, who is on some of the songs. I’m still sad; Conception was probably able to replace Loomis technically, but he doesn’t have his guitar charisma (yet).
Clear? Of course – especially in the track that I find the most ‘experimental’; ‘Vivre Libre’. That’s right, Alissa sings in French. Which is not surprising, since the woman is Canadian. ‘Vivre Libre’ is a cover of the French band BLASPHEME from 1985. And the track will provide further argument for certain skeptics who have long suspected that AE are moving too much towards the mainstream. It’s true; despite all the power and heaviness, AE have developed a lot more melodic elements in recent years, showing more diversity in this area. This may be related to the creativity and musicality of Alissa White Gluz, who has been singing with the band for a good ten years now. Not only does the singer master growls, screams and cleans at a superb level, but in my opinion she currently has the best voice in the metal universe. And she is creative in many ways, does not let herself be constrained. Mastermind Michael Amott seems to accept that as well. With good reason, because since White Gluz joined ARCH ENEMY, the band’s success has only gone in one direction; steeply upwards. If there were shares, I would buy them.
Conclusion
I could go into the tracks in more detail now, define tips for listening. But that’s not necessary, because with the material already released, the melodic metallers have already set the bar so high that you can wonder if the album will live up to expectations. My opinion: definitely yes. At this band’s level, it’s difficult to improve – ARCH ENEMY have done it again with ‘Blood Dynasty’ – buy it even if you’re not a fan yet!
