Ich gestehe, ich habe diese Truppe bisher nicht gekannt – grosser, grosser Fehler! Was da aus Maryland auf uns zu kommt, ist mit Garantie eines der besten Alben aus dem Bereich harten, modernen Rocks oder Metals.
Victor Ritchie (Gesang), Mike Conner (Gitarre), Rich Stevenson (Bass) und Mike Showalter (Schlagzeug) haben bereits einen Deal mit Mascot Records – das allein sagt schon etwas über die Band aus. Das niederländische Label führt ein hochkarätiges Roster mit Bands und Künstlern wie BETH HART, VOLBEAT, JOE BONAMASSA, KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD, CANDY DULFER, STEVE VAI, TOTO, GEORGE BENSON, GARY MOORE, MACEO PARKER oder VOLBEAT – und eben ANY GIVEN SIN.

Das amerikanische Quartett setzt sich also mit seinem inneren Krieg, seinen inneren Kämpfen auseinander – und wie. Das meint Fronter Victor Ritchie zum Album:
„Wir haben versucht, auf dieser Platte viele Vibes zu treffen, was den Inhalt und den Kontext angeht. Zum größten Teil dreht sich alles um die innere Zerrissenheit, aber man bewegt sich vorwärts. Ich hoffe, dass ihr die Botschaft aufgreift, niemals aufzugeben.“

Musikalisch packen die Jungs das in zehn Tracks, welche nicht nur perfekt arrangiert sind, sondern auch eine enorme musikalische Vielfalt repräsentieren. Beginnen wir doch gleich am Anfang. Der Titeltrack beginnt einerseits wie viele Metalcore-Songs. Gleichzeitig erinnert mich die Stimme ein wenig an Draiman beim Song „Immortalized“. Überhaupt, Sänger Ritchies Stimme hat verschiedene Ingredienzen, welche an den DISTURBED-Sänger erinnern, das rauhe Timbre, die Kraft in den gehaltenen Tönen, die Intensität und diesen Ansatz eines Jammerns in den mittleren Tonlagen. Okay, Draimans ungleubliche Dynamik erreicht der Sänger (noch) nicht. Diese Nähe zu DISTURBED ist nicht ganz zufällig, hat deren Basser John Moyer doch bei der Umsetzung geholfen.
Die buchstäbliche Ruhe vor dem Sturm liefert der entsprechende Track – ein richtiges Brett mit knackigen, druckvollen Drums und einem Riffing, dass sich mit seinem Fettgehalt quer durch das Album zieht.
Zu einigen Tracks, beispielsweise „Calm Before The Storm“, „Still Sinking“ und „Cold Bones“ gibt es bereits Videos – also Links folgen, Kopfhörer oder noch besser geile Lautsprecher auf volles Rohr hochfahren und dann einfach nur geniessen.

Bei „Cold Bones zeigen die Jungs, dass sie auch ruhiger, balladesk können – ohne auch nur ein Jota an Kraft zu verlieren. Der Track hat dermassen viel Energie, dass er einen klaren Weg aus deiner inneren Zerrissenheit bieten kann – ohne die Kraft von Wunden zu verleugnen.
„Insidious“ zeigt, die Band macht alles, bloss keinen „klassischen“ Sound – wobei klassisch hier meint „so-wie-harter-Rock-schon-immer-geklungen-hat“. Der Track ist modern, frisch, abwechslungsreich und doch im besten Sinn kreativ – möglicherweise ein Ergebnis der Zusammenarbeit mit Produzent Chris Dawson – da haben sich Gleichgesinnte gefunden.
Eine Stadionhymne haben die Jungs schliesslich mit „The Way I Say Goodbye“ geschaffen – das ist Musik, die live eine Stimmung erzeugen kann, wie wir sie von den ganz Grossen kennen, den FOO FIGHTERS etwa oder eben DISTURBED – Gänsehautmusik!

Fazit

Es ist mir wieder einmal geschehen, was ich eigentlich nicht so mag – ich habe aus einem runden, stimmigen Album Anspieltipps herausgelöst. Das könnte den Eindruck erwecken, es gäbe Schwachstellen, bessere und schlechtere Tracks. Nope; no fillers, just killers!
Wer Rocknews Switzerland kennt, weiss, dass wir nur ganz selten von uns aus nach Promomaterial fragen – hier habe ich es gottseidank getan. Kaufen? Was bitte soll die Frage? Kaufen!

I confess, I didn’t know this band until now – big, big mistake! What is coming from Maryland is definitely one of the best albums in the field of hard, modern rock or metal.
Victor Ritchie (vocals), Mike Conner (guitar), Rich Stevenson (bass) and Mike Showalter (drums) already have a deal with Mascot Records – that alone says something about the band. The Dutch label carries a top-class roster with bands and artists like BETH HART, VOLBEAT, JOE BONAMASSA, KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD, CANDY DULFER, STEVE VAI, TOTO, GEORGE BENSON, GARY MOORE, MACEO PARKER or VOLBEAT – and just ANY GIVEN SIN.

So the American quartet deals with its inner war, its inner struggles – and how. Fronter Victor Ritchie has this to say about the album:
„We tried to hit a lot of vibes on this record in terms of content and context. For the most part, it’s all about inner turmoil, but you move forward. I hope you pick up on the message of never giving up.“

Musically, the guys pack that into ten tracks, which are not only perfectly arranged, but also represent tremendous musical diversity. Let’s start right at the beginning. The title track starts on the one hand like many metalcore songs. At the same time, the voice reminds me a bit of Draiman on the song „Immortalized“. In general, singer Ritchie’s voice has several ingredients that remind of the DISTURBED singer, the rough timbre, the power in the held notes, the intensity and this approach of a wail in the middle pitches. Okay, Draiman’s ungleubious dynamics are not achieved by the singer (yet). This proximity to DISTURBED is not entirely coincidental, as their bassist John Moyer helped with the implementation.
The literal calm before the storm delivers the corresponding track – a real board with crisp, punchy drums and a riffing that runs with its fat content across the album.
For the three tracks „Calm Before The Storm“, „Still Sinking“ and „Cold Bones“ there are already videos – so follow the links, turn up your headphones or even better horny speakers to full blast and then just enjoy.

With „Cold Bones“ the guys show that they can also be quieter, balladesque – without losing even one iota of power. The track has so much energy that it can offer a clear way out of your inner turmoil – without denying the power of wounds.
„Insidious“ shows the band does everything but a „classic“ sound – where classic here means „like-hard-rock-has-always-sounded“. The track is modern, fresh, varied and yet creative in the best sense – possibly a result of the collaboration with producer Chris Dawson – like-minded people have found each other.
Finally, the guys have created a stadium anthem with „The Way I Say Goodbye“ – this is music that can create an atmosphere live, as we know it from the greats, the FOO FIGHTERS for example or just DISTURBED – goosebumps music!

Conclusion

It happened to me once again, what I actually don’t like so much – I have taken out of a well-rounded, coherent album, play tips. This could give the impression that there are weak points, better and worse tracks. Nope; no fillers, just killers!
Who knows Rocknews Switzerland, knows that we rarely ask for promo material – here I did it thank god. Buy? What’s up with that question? Buy!
