Die Bremer Kapelle ANCIENT CURSE besteht aus Sänger und Gitarrist Pepe Pierez, dem Gitarristen Gunnar Erxleben, Bassist Thorsten Penz und Drummer Matthias Schröder. Der Vierer ohne Steuermann musiziert seit 1985, also seit strammen 35 Jahren und seit gut 25 Jahren in derselben Besetzung.
ANCIENT CURSE haben in den Neunzigern zwei Alben und eine EP veröffentlicht, jetzt lassen sie ihre nächste Scheibe „The New Prophecy“ von der Leine. Auf dem neuen Album wirken übrigens Henning Basse „(METALIUM / SONS OF SEASONS) und Oliver Palotai (KAMELOT) als Gäste mit.

Wie es sich für eine progressive Band gehört, benötigen sie für eine Spielzeit von knapp einer Stunde nur gerade 9 Tracks, von denen der kürzeste bereits gute vier Minuten dauert, der längste beinahe doppelt so lange.
Was man allgemein sagen kann – das Album zeichnet sich durch ein sehr feines Songwriting aus. Sämtliche Songs haben ihre Eigenheiten, kein Track klingt wie der andere. Dabei werden „disharmonische“ Passagen ebenso eingestreut wie akustische Gitarrenparts oder Chorgesang im Hintergrund. Basis der Songs ist immer druckvoller, knackiger Metalsound. Weniger als andere Progbands verirren sich die Jungs auch bei längeren Tracks nicht in technischen Spielereien – der rote Faden bleibt auch über Breakdowns oder Rhythmuswechsel erhalten, als Hörer fühle ich mich durch die Soundkonstruktionen geführt.
Meine Favourites sind einerseits „We FolloW The Signs“, ein enorm powervolles Stück Musik, oder „The Shadow“, ein Song gespickt mit Rhythmuswechseln und Breakdowns, angereichert durch eine doomige Attitüde, ohne düster und breiig zu wirken.
Ein richtig geiles Brecheisen ist „Forever Young“ – knackige Riffs, blastende Beats und intensive, mehrstimmige Gesangsparts. Der Track ist kompakt und bringt viel Vorwärtsdrang – er ist nciht mehr und nciht wewniger als der Beweis, dass die Band den Ausdruck Prog-Power-Metalband verdient.

Fazit

„The New Prophecy“ ist ein musikalisch anspruchsvolles Album, ohne verkopft zu sein. Trotz der technisch ausgeklügelten Konstruktionen wirken die Tracks harmonisch und „leicht verständlich“. Ein cooles Album, das es verdient, eure Plattensammlungen zu bereichern.

The Bremen band ANCIENT CURSE consists of singer and guitarist Pepe Pierez, guitarist Gunnar Erxleben, bassist Thorsten Penz and drummer Matthias Schröder. The foursome without coxswain has been playing in the same line-up since 1985, i.e. for a tight 35 years and for a good 25 years.
ANCIENT CURSE released two albums and an EP in the nineties, now they let their next album „The New Prophecy off the leash. On the new album, Henning Basse (METALIUM / SONS OF SEASONS) and Oliver Palotai (KAMELOT) are guests on the album.

As it is usual for a progressive band, they only need just 9 tracks for a playing time of less than one hour, of which the shortest already lasts a good four minutes, the longest almost twice as long.
What you can say in general – the album is characterized by a very fine songwriting. All songs have their own peculiarities, no track sounds like the other. Disharmonic“ passages are interspersed as well as acoustic guitar parts or choral singing in the background. The basis of the songs is always powerful, crisp metal sound. Less than other prog bands, the guys don’t get lost in technical gadgets even on longer tracks – the common thread remains even over breakdowns or rhythm changes, as listener I feel guided through the sound constructions.
My favourites are on the one hand „We FolloW The Signs“, an enormously powerful piece of music, or „The Shadow“, a song full of rhythm changes and breakdowns, enriched by a doomy attitude, without appearing gloomy and mushy.
A really cool crowbar is „Forever Young“ – crisp riffs, blasting beats and intensive, polyphonic vocal parts. The track is compact and brings a lot of forward drive – it’s nothing more and nothing less than the proof that the band deserves the expression Prog-Power-Metalband.

Conclusion

„The New Prophecy“ is a musically demanding album without being over-headed. Despite the technically sophisticated constructions, the tracks appear harmonious and „easy to understand“. A cool album that deserves to enrich your record collections.
