Klar gibt der bekennende AA-Fan von Rocknews 10 Punkte – unreflektiert und anbiedernd. Oder doch nicht?
Jepp, es ist korrekt, dass ich Fan von AMON AMARTH bin. Gemeinsam mit ARCH ENEMY – welche ich später in diesem Jahr noch abfeiern werde – machen sie für mich die Speerspitze des Melodic Death Metal aus. Nach den beiden Bands folgen dann gleich AMORPHIS.
Nicht korrekt ist jedoch, dass die Punktevergabe unreflektiert oder gar anbiedernd wäre – das Album ist wirklich grossartig.
Johan Hegg und seine Kollegen, die beiden Gitarristen Johan Söderberg und Olavi Mikkonen, Bassist Ted Lundström und Drummer Jocke Wallgren haben ein Album gemacht, das vielfältiger ist als frühere Scheiben und gleichzeitig insgesamt etwas härter und dunkler. Zudem haben sie einen hochkarätigen Gast an Bord – niemand Geringeren als Biff Byford, den Frontmann der NWOBHM Legenden SAXON.
Jetzt aber Schritt für Schritt. Vorangekündigt haben AA das Album mit zwei Vorabsingles und dazugehörigen Videos; „Get In The Ring“, in dessen Video der Wrestling Star Eric Redbeard die Hauptrolle spielt. Zufall, dass auch einer der bekanntesten Wikinger Erik Thorvaldsson hiess, wegen seiner roten Haare und seines roten Bartes der „Rote“ genannt. Er hat Grönland entdeckt und besiedelt. Einer seiner Söhne, Leif Eriksson entdeckte schon 1021 Neufundland und somit Amerika – mehr als 450 Jahre vor Christoph Columbus.
Weiter mit dem Album; das zweite Video wurde zum Titeltrack „The Great Heathen Army“ gedreht. Im Gegensatz zum letzten Album „Berserker“ ist das zwölfte Machwerk kein Konzeptalbum, dreht sich aber erneut um historische Gegebenheiten. Es geht dabei um eine Invasisonarmee der Wikinger, welche um 865 N.Chr. in England einfiel, zuerst gewann, letztlich dann aber von den Briten besiegt und „ins Meer zurückgeworfen“ wurde. Und hier kommt Saxonian Biff Byford ins Spiel. Im Track „Saxons And Vikings“ singt er über eben diese Niederlage, welche das Ende der Wikinger in England beschreibt. Biff schmettert den Nordmännern den „english steal“ entgegen, kämpft diesen Kampf quasi mit Johan – und gewinnt ihn.
Soweit zur Geschichte, musikalisch hat das Album einige Abwechslung zu bieten. Da sind „typische“ AA-Songs zu finden: die beiden Vorabsingles etwa oder „Oden Owns You All“. Mit „Find Your Way Or Make It“ liefern die Schweden einen Track, der zu den härteren gehört und in der Tradition früherer Alben wie „Twilight Of The Thunder God“ von 2008, „Surtur Rising“ von 2011 oder „Deceiver Of The Gods“ von 2013. So gesehen ist das Album wieder ein Death Metal – Produkt, nachdem viele Fans „Berserker“ eher als Heavy Metal einstuften.
Insgesamt birgt das Album für mich drei Überraschungen. „Heidrun“, weil es schon beinahe übermelodisch ist – und wieder eher als Heavy Metal bezeichnet werden könnte. Dann „Saxons And Vikings“, weil hier nicht nur ein legendärer britischer Musiker eingeladen wurde, sondern Biff seine Aufgabe als Gegner des AA-Frontmannes sehr gut erledigt.
Dann wäre da noch „The Serpent’s Trail“, das irgendwie sehr modern klingt, im ersten Teil ziemlich nett rüberkommt, sich in der zweiten Hälfte wieder als gewohnt dunkler, schleppender Track entpuppt, wie wir sie von AMON AMARTH eben auch kennen.
Fazit
Persönlich bin ich ein absoluter Fan von „Twilight Of The Thunder God“ – für mich das bisher stärkste Album der Schweden. Mit „The Great Heathen Army“ legen die Mannen eins drauf, kombinieren ihren typischen Viking Metal mit abwechslungsreichen Tracks, die überraschen.
Ganz klar, dieses Album wird zu meinem persönlichen Zwilling des „Thunder God“ und damit zum besten Album bisher. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, die Jungs live im Hallenstadion zu erleben – sie werden eine weitere Konzerthalle in Schutt und Asche legen, das ist so klar wie das Amen in der Kirche. Sagen wir es mit Shakespeare: kaufen oder nicht kaufen, das ist keine Frage!

Continuing with the album, the second video was shot for the title track „The Great Heathen Army“. Unlike the last album „Berserker“, the twelfth work is not a concept album, but again revolves around historical events. It is about an invasion army of the Vikings, which invaded England around 865 A.D., first won, but finally was defeated by the British and „thrown back into the sea“. And this is where Saxonian Biff Byford comes in. In the track „Saxons And Vikings“ he sings about this very defeat, which describes the end of the Vikings in England. Biff belts out the „english steal“ against the Northmen, fights this battle quasi with Johan – and wins it.
So much for the story, musically the album has some variety to offer. There are „typical“ AA songs to be found: the two pre-release singles for example or „Oden Owns You All“. With „Find Your Way Or Make It“ the Swedes deliver a track that belongs to the heavier ones and in the tradition of earlier albums like „Twilight Of The Thunder God“ from 2008, „Surtur Rising“ from 2011 or „Deceiver Of The Gods“ from 2013. Seen in this way the album is again a death metal – product, after many fans classified „Berserk“ rather as heavy metal.
All in all, the album holds three surprises for me. „Heidrun“, because it is almost over-melodic – and again could rather be called Heavy Metal. Then „Saxons And Vikings“, because here not only a legendary British musician was invited, but Biff does his job as an opponent of the AA frontman very well.
Then there would be „The Serpent’s Trail“, which somehow sounds very modern, comes across quite nice in the first part, turns out in the second half again as a usual dark, dragging track, as we just know them from AMON AMARTH.
Conclusion
Personally, I am an absolute fan of „Twilight Of The Thunder God“ – for me the strongest album of the Swedes so far. With „The Great Heathen Army“ the guys go one better, combining their typical Viking Metal with varied tracks that surprise.
Quite clearly, this album will become my personal twin of „Thunder God“ and thus the best album so far. I can hardly wait to see the guys live in the Hallenstadion – they will lay another concert hall in ruins, that is as clear as the Amen in the church. Let’s say it with Shakespeare: to buy or not to buy, that’s not a question!
