The Berserker At Stamford Bridge.

Fazit

The concept of the berserk is probably a term for most people. If AMON AMARTH call an album that, it must be a Viking. Danny Frischknecht

The band
Do you still need to introduce AMON AMARTH? Hardly, after all, the band doesn’t only belong to the spearhead of the subgenre Viking Metal, they are probably the most famous Melodic Death Metal band in the world.
There shouldn’t be a known club or festival that didn’t play for the band around singer and frontman Johan Hegg, countless of them as headliners.
Johan Söderberg and Olavi Mikkonen work on the guitars, Ted Lundström on the bass and Jocke Wallgren on the drums since 2016.

The album
After „Jomsviking“ marked the anniversary, Berserker is the eleventh album of the band.
It will be released on May 3rd this year. What’s new is that the album was recorded by Jay Ruston. He is well known for his engagements with ANTHRAX or STONE SOUR.
The band says they have achieved a new freshness, which is reflected in the musical design of the album.
Of course „Berserker“ is also a typical AMON album. The men are neither calm nor tired. Listening to the record for the first time, I thought for a moment that the Swedes had made their first real ballad, „Fafner’s Gold begins with soft, acoustic guitar sounds. But the silence lasts only a short time.
My favourite on the album is the anthem „The Berserker At Stamford Bridge. It’s one of the stories on the disc that marked the last battle of the Vikings in 1066 against the English. This lost battle also sealed the fate of the Vikings, even if there were still isolated appearances of the Northmen afterwards. After the invasion of Lindisfarne in 793, the Vikings spread as a plague all over Europe, not only Hamburg or Paris became victims of the Vikings, their raids led them to Portugal and Spain.
There are a lot of legends about the Berserkers themselves, science disagrees who is meant by it. On the one hand it is said to have been a kind of elite unit which stood at the top of the Viking ships and ecstatically threw themselves into battles without feeling pain. Then again they are loose groups of looters, whose trademark was wolfskins, which they wore over their shoulders.
„Berserker“ is not an album that deals centrally with these warriors. The album rather describes the decline of the once proud Nordic people in many different ways, who during two and a half centuries have been terrorizing Europe.
What makes the album fascinating for me – AMON AMARTH manage to incorporate new musical subtleties, to develop further without forgetting their roots. „Berserker“ is more guitar-heavy than earlier records, dares to take his first acoustic steps, Johan Hegg uses the full range of his growl voice, surprises with almost calm passages in the aforementioned „Berserker At Stamford Bridge“, to roar off in titles like „When Once Again We Can Set Our Sails“ as always.
I think these two tracks, along with „Fafner’s Gold“ and „Into The Dark“, are the best songs on the album.

Fazit
Johan Hegg refers to „Berserker“ as AMON AMARTH 2.0, saying that they have tried to explore other sides of their musicality. „If you’re satisfied with what you have and are, why should you go on?“
With „Berserker“ AMON AMARTH demonstrate impressively that they still sit on the Viking Metal throne after more than 25 years – they have a place in Walhalla for sure!
„Berserker“ isn’t the strongest AMON album, doesn’t quite come close to „Jomsviking“ or „Twilight Of The Thundergod“ in my opinion – but the best thing the genre will produce this year, I’m convinced, is it anyway.
