ALL GOOD THINGS – „A Hope In Hell“ am Freitag

Bereits mit „Kingdom“ haben die Kalifornier eine Duftmarke gesetzt, „For The Glory“ ist schon 2017 durch die Decke gegangen und die letzte Single-Auskopplung „Comeback“ dürfte diese Erfolgsserie fortsetzen. Grund genug, das Debutalbum der Band genauer unter die Lupe zu nehmen.

Wann haben wir zum letzten Mal eine Band gehabt, welche gleich drei Singleauskopplungen ihres Debutalbums ins Radio gebracht haben? Sie haben die Songs nicht nur ins Radio gebracht, sondern auch dafür gesorgt, dass sie in den ernstzunehmenden Rockradios durchgestartet sind.

Jetzt legt die kalifornische Truppe mit Sänger Dan Murphy, den Gitarristen Andrew Bojanic und Miles Franco, Liz Hooper am Bass und Drummer Randy Cooke ihr Debutalbum vor. Die Jungs haben es dabei auch geschafft, für ihre Songs Gäste wie Johnny 3 Tears und Charlie Scene von HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD („For The Glory“) und Craig Mabbitt von ESCAPE THE FATE („Comeback“) zu mobilisieren. Mabbitt äussert sich da sehr positiv über die Labelkollegen:
“Ich liebe es, an neuer Musik zu arbeiten, diese zu hören und neue Songs zu singen. Es ist immer schmeichelhaft in die kreative Vision anderer Künstler mit einbezogen zu werden. Seit kurzem bin ich nun auch ein Fan von ALL GOOD THINGS, weil ich finde, dass sie etwas wirklich Cooles machen, und es ist nur ein zusätzlicher Bonus, dass wir in einer gemeinsamen Label-Familie sind.”
Was haben die Jungs mit ihrem Erstling musikalisch zu bieten?

Meine Bewertung mit zehn möglichen Punkten macht es bereits klar – die Scheibe hat das Zeug zum Album des Jahres im Bereich Alternative Rock. Man soll junge Bands nicht unter Druck setzen, indem man sie mit den Grossen des Geschäftes vergleicht, im Vorprogramm der FOO FIGHTERS würden die Jungs aber deutlich mehr veranstalten, als die Bühne lauwarm zu temperieren. Ganz abgesehen davon, dass der Frontmann dem verehrten Dave Grohl etwas ähnlich sieht.
Der Sound der Kalifornier ist gemacht für die ganz grossen Bühnen – viele Millionen Streams zeigen mehr als deutlich, dass die Band ihre Fanbase laufend erweitert.
Wie gesagt, schreib ein Album mit dreizehn Tracks und pack da gleich einmal drei Blockbuster drauf. Die Jungs sind unverschämt talentiert. Als Musiker haben sie das längst bewiesen, arbeiten sie doch alle seit Jahren als Profimusiker. Truppen wie die Garagerocker von SMASH MOUTH oder Pop Ikone BRITNEY SPEARS haben schon auf die Dienste der Band zurückgegriffen.
Was kann man also zum Album noch sagen? Vielleicht, dass von den dreizehn fukkin‘ Tracks keiner abfällt. Klar sind nicht alle Songs gleich episch wie die oben erwähnten.
Die unheimliche Wucht der Stimme von Dan Murphy fegt aber ungebremst über die gesamte Scheibe. Ein Beispiel dafür ist das etwas ruhigere „Sirens“ oder das leicht Modern Metal – angehauchte „Push Me Down“.
Überhaupt, die Genresache. Ist das nun Stadionrock? Oder Alternative? Oder doch Nu Metal, gar Metalcore? Sch… drauf, von allem das Beste, sämtliche Ingredienzen, welche ein wirklich grosses Album ausmachen.
Man mag monieren, dass sich mit „Lights Out“ so etwas wie eine poppig angehauchte Nummer auf das Album verirrt hätte. Sobald man aber genauer hinhört, ist da wieder dieser fette, treibende Sound, der ohne jeden Zweifel in die Rockecke gehört. Es dürfte eher umgekehrt sein; wenn eine Popband einen solchen Track in ihr Palmares aufnehmen würde, mutierten sie augenblicklich zu einer Rockband. Wär vielleicht was für BRITNEY SPEARS?
Das gesamte Album mag vom Songwriting her auf den ersten Blick sehr ähnliche Songs hervorgebracht haben, ist das ein Fehler? Nein, denn es zeigt, dass die Jungs etwas gefunden haben, wonach andere Bands jahrelang suchen – eine eigene, unverwechselbare Identität, einen eigenen Stil.

Fazit

Dass man sich das Album zulegen muss, sollte spätestens nach dem ersten Reinhören klar sein. Nicht nur die drei genannten Auskopplungen, sondern das gesamte Album hat das Zeug, weit mehr als ein Furz im Universum zu werden. Unbedingt kaufen!

The Californians already made a name for themselves with „Kingdom“, „For The Glory“ went through the roof even in 2017 and the last single „Comeback“ should continue this series of successes. Reason enough to take a closer look at the band’s debut album.
When was the last time we had a band that put three singles from their debut album on the radio? Not only did they get the songs on the radio, but they also made sure that they took off on the serious rock radio stations.

Now the Californian band with singer Dan Murphy, guitarists Andrew Bojanic and Miles Franco, Liz Hooper on bass and drummer Randy Cooke presents their debut album. The guys also managed to mobilise guests like Johnny 3 Tears and Charlie Scene from HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD („For The Glory“) and Craig Mabbitt from ESCAPE THE FATE („Comeback“) for their songs. Mabbitt is very positive about his label mates:
„I love working on new music, hearing it and singing new songs. It’s always flattering to be included in the creative vision of other artists. I’ve recently become a fan of ALL GOOD THINGS as well, because I think they’re doing something really cool, and it’s just an added bonus that we’re in a label family together.“
What do the guys have to offer musically with their debut album?

My rating with ten possible points already makes it clear – the disc has what it takes to be the album of the year in the field of alternative rock. You shouldn’t put young bands under pressure by comparing them to the big names in the business, but in an opening act for the FOO FIGHTERS, the guys would clearly do more than keep the stage lukewarm. Not to mention that the frontman looks a bit like the revered Dave Grohl.
The sound of the Californians is made for the really big stages – many millions of streams show more than clearly that the band is constantly expanding its fanbase.
As I said, write an album with thirteen tracks and put three blockbusters on it. The guys are outrageously talented. As musicians, they have proven that long ago, since they have all been working as professional musicians for years. Troupes like the garage rockers SMASH MOUTH or pop icon BRITNEY SPEARS have already called on the band’s services.
So what else can be said about the album? Maybe that none of the thirteen fukkin‘ tracks falls flat. Sure, not all the songs are equally epic as the ones mentioned above.
But the eerie power of Dan Murphy’s voice sweeps unchecked across the entire disc. An example of this is the somewhat quieter „Sirens“ or the slightly modern metal-inspired „Push Me Down“.
Anyway, the genre thing. Is this stadium rock? Or alternative? Or Nu Metal, even Metalcore? Sh… it, the best of everything, all the ingredients that make up a really great album.
One might complain that with „Lights Out“ something like a pop-inspired number has strayed onto the album. But as soon as you listen more closely, there is that fat, driving sound again, which without a doubt belongs in the rock corner. It might be the other way round; if a pop band would include such a track in their palmares, they would instantly mutate into a rock band. Might be something for BRITNEY SPEARS?
In terms of songwriting, the whole album may have produced very similar songs at first glance, is that a mistake? No, because it shows that the guys have found something that other bands have been searching for for years – their own distinctive identity, their own style.

Conclusion

It should be clear at the latest after the first listen that you have to get the album. Not only the three singles mentioned, but the whole album has the potential to become far more than a fart in the universe. Definitely buy it!
