Should they be taken seriously now or not? ALESTORM have earned the fame of a metallic party band in the years since their inception – and the question is whether they’re going to put on a more serious show with their latest album. At least they make that claim themselves – a little bit. I don’t like to be convinced that much, because actually I don’t want a serious ALESTORM album. Even as a metalhead I have the right to music that you can listen to in case of need on the beach in Malle (where they would never take me though) or at a booth with „fuck“-shots at SUMMERBREEZE.
Singer and keytar player Christopher Bowes has managed to sail his pirate band into relatively calm waters since 2010. Bassist Gareth Murdock has been on board since 2008, drummer Peter Alcorn since 2010, keyboardist Elliot Vernon joined in 2011, and second guitarist Máté Bodor was shanghaied in 2015.

The album? Well, for the most part what fans have come to expect; pirate party with a little too much keyboards in a tight powermetal outfit. As before, the drums crash, the guitars riff, the bass provides a stable hull and the vocals point to distant and stormy waters. A highlight for me is „Under Blackened Banners“, horny solo parts, post hardcore voices, drums and bass straight ahead – no prisoners are taken here.
„Magellan’s Expedition“ is more the epic anthem, often performed in the seedy bars of Tortuga. Also hammer is „Cannonball“ – this is how High Speed Folk Metal must sound, fast, faster, ALESTORM. The keyboards at the beginning somehow remind of the Soundtrack to „Monkey Island“. You don’t know that? Then you’re definitely too young…
I wouldn’t say now that the album is really more serious, but besides pure party tracks there are SOngs that stand out musically. These are besides the mentioned for example the very balladesque „Wooden Leg“, the third part of the well-known saga. Exciting are the Spanish and Japanese singers who are involved – an anthem before the Lord!
When Scots celebrate, they usually invite guests. With ALESTORM, for example, these are the metal choir „Hellscore“, Patty Gurdy on the eponymous instrument and fiddler Ally Storch from SUBWAY TO SALLY.

.

conclusion

Nine points for an ALESTORM album? Yep, because the album fulfills three conditions for this; on the one hand it entertains extremely well due to its party songs, on the other hand it fulfills the expectations of the fans, but surprises at the same time. It will definitely not be the power metal album of the year – but it will certainly sail into my top ten. Who buys the AL.bum, makes nothing wrong and has material for one or the other party – so buy!
