Ich komme nicht umhin zu beichten – einer Sängerin wie Alanis Morisette keine volle Punktzahl zu geben ist einerseits beinahe ein Sakrileg und andererseits für einen Musikliebhaber schwierig. Nichts desto trotz habe ich diesen kleinen Abzug gemacht – nicht, weil das Album an sich nicht perfekt wäre, sondern, weil mir der spezielle Track, der Übersong fehlt.
ALANIS MORISETTE ist bekannt dafür, dass sie auf ihren Alben weitgehend ruhig erscheint, viele Songs getragen oder balladenhaft sind. Dahinter stecken aber oft Tracks, welche live eine völlig andere Dimension entfalten – sie werden intensiver, rockiger und deutlich kräftiger. Ein Beispiel ist da etwa „Uninvited“.
Weiter ist die kanadisch-amerikanische Sängerin jemand, der seine Erfahrungen direkt verarbeitet sehr persönlich und oft autobiografisch ist. Auch das neue Album – notabene das erste seit acht Jahren – gibt einen tiefen Eindruck in ihr Leben. „Reasosn I Drink“ beispielsweise ist ein wütender Song, der von einer Frau stammt, welche Depressionen und Alkohol und die daraus resultierende Wut aus eigener Erfahrung kennt.
„Wut ist immens wichtig. Wut ist für mich ein positives Gefühl. Solange wir unsere Wut spüren und ihr Ausdruck verleihen können, sind wir nicht depressiv. Meine Wut hilft mir, als Mamabär die Kinder zu beschützen, und sie hilft mir auch, wenn ich bei Kongressen über Themen wie das Patriarchat und die Stellung von Frauen in der Musikbranche debattiere.“
So merke ich, dass ich dem Album doch fünf von fünf Punkten hätte geben können, denn „Reasons I Drink“ ist ein spezieller und für mich der beste Song auf dem Album.
Die ansonsten eher ruhigen Tracks auf dem Album gehen tief, spätestens in dem Moment, wo man sich auf die Texte einlässt. Hier ein kiurzer Auszug aus dem Song „Smiling“

Fazit
ALANIS MORISETTE ist kein einfacher Mensch und sie macht keine einfache Musik. Selbst ihre grossen Hits bleiben häufig missverstanden. Auch „Such Pretty Forks In The Road“ ist das Abbild eines ebenso zerrissenen wie faszinierenden Menschen. Die Sängerin mit den Millionenhits ist und bleibt aber vor allem eines; ehrlich und authentisch.

I can’t avoid confessing – not giving a singer like Alanis Morisette a full score is almost a sacrilege on the one hand and difficult for a music lover on the other. Nevertheless I made this little deduction – not because the album itself is not perfect, but because I miss the special track, the overtone.
ALANIS MORISETTE is well known for appearing largely calm on her albums, many songs are carried or ballad-like. But behind it there are often tracks which unfold a completely different dimension live – they become more intense, more rocking and clearly more powerful. One example is „Uninvited“.
Furthermore, the Canadian-American singer is someone who processes his experiences directly, very personal and often autobiographical.
Also the new album – the first one in eight years – gives a deep impression of her life. „Reasosn I Drink“, for example, is an angry song written by a woman who knows depression and alcohol and the rage it causes from her own experience.
„Anger is immensely important. Anger is a positive feeling for me. As long as we can feel our anger and express it, we are not depressed. My anger helps me as a mama bear to protect the children, and it also helps me when I debate issues like patriarchy and the position of women in the music industry at conventions.“
So I realize that I could have given the album five out of five points after all, because „Reasons I Drink“ is a special song and for me it’s the best song on the album.
The otherwise rather quiet tracks on the album go deep, at the latest at the moment you get involved with the lyrics. Here a short excerpt from the song „Smiling“

Conclusion
ALANIS MORISETTE is not an easy person and she does not make simple music. Even her big hits often remain misunderstood. Also „Such Pretty Forks In The Road“ is the image of a torn as well as fascinating person. But the singer with the million hits is and remains one thing above all; honest and authentic.
