AC/DC mit „Power Up“

AC/DC sind erstens unangreifbar und zweitens prallt jegliche Kritik an der Band an ihren Fans ab. wie also eine Review schreiben, ohne sich nachher nicht mehr aus dem Haus trauen zu können?

Es ist eh schon klar, dass das neue Album „Power Up“ es weit nach oben in die Charts schaffen wird. Es wäre sehr schwer für AC/DC, ein dermassen schlechtes Album zu machen, dass das nicht geschieht. Die Frage bleibt vorerst, ob das Album gut genug ist, um hohe Chartplatzierungen rein musikalisch zu rechtfertigen.
Angus Young (Lead Gitarre), Brian Johnson (Lead Gesang), Cliff Williams (Bass), Phil Rudd (Schlagzeug) und Stevie Young (Rhythmus Gitarre) haben sich jedenfalls wieder zusammengefunden , um uns ihr Album Nummer 17 zum Frass vorzuwerfen.

Seit 2014 warten die Fans auf neues Material der Australier, und eines kann ich vorausschicken; sie werden ihre Freude am Album haben. Und ebenfalls gleich vorneweg; grosse Überraschungen bleiben aus. „Power Up“ ist ein typisches, solides AC/DC-Album, nicht mehr, nicht weniger.
Die Scheibe hat ordentlich Wumms, Songwriting und Produktion rotzen auf gewohnt hohem Niveau daher. Ein Dutzend Songs bereiten knapp eine Stunde Hardrock-Freude. Etwas Besonderes, das ich so noch nicht gesehen habe; die limitierte Edition, die als „one-of-a-kind Deluxe POWER UP Box“ angekündigt wird, ist das ultimative Fan-Packet. Drückt man den Knopf an der Seite, erstrahlt das AC/DC-Logo in Neonlicht, während die Anfangs-Akkorde von „Shot In The Dark“ aus den eingebauten Lautsprechern erklingen. In der Box findet sich die das gesamte CD-Package in einem Softpack mit einem 20-seitigen Booklet, das exklusive Fotos enthält. Dazu ein USB-Ladekabel, um die Box immer „powered up“ zu halten. Die Vinyl-LP ist auf 180 Gramm Vinyl gepresst, umhüllt von einem Gatefold-Cover. Limitierte Ausgaben der LP werden bei ausgewählten Händlern und im Online-Store der Band erhältlich sein.
Eine spannende Frage bleibt. Gibt es Tracks, die sich hervorheben, die bei den Fans schneller Gefallen finden werden als andere? „Through The Mists Of Time“ finde ich rhythmisch spannend, so eine Art Midtempo ohne den üblichen stomp groove der Band. „Demon Fire“ hat zwar den typischen Stampf-Rhythmus der Band, ist aber deutlich abwechlungsreicher und mit viel Bluesrock angereichert. Die Gitarre klingt teilweise etwas wie in den frühesten Rock’n’Roll-Zeiten. Das dürfte ein Mitsing-Track in den Stadien werden.
ebenfalls im Midtempobereich angesiedelt ist „No Man’s Land“, etwas chillig und trotzdem hundert Prozent AC/DC.
Ein total zweihundert Prozent typischer AC/DC-Stampfer mit allen Zutaten, welche die Band ausmachen, ist der letzte Track auf dem Album „Code Red“ – der Track hat das geilste Solo auf dem Album.

Fazit

Also, in Begeisterungsstürme kann ich nicht ausbrechen. Das Album ist so, wie es AC/DC-Fans erwarten, das Niveau ist gewohnt hoch und der Sound ist solide. Es bleiben aber Überraschungen aus, Songs, welche zu ganz grossen Hits werden könnten, fehlen meiner Ansicht nach. AC/DC haben dasselbe Problem, das andere Kultbands auch haben – die Liste der Superhits ist so lange, dass das kaum mehr erreicht, geschweige denn getoppt werden kann. Für einmal kann ich mich nicht zu einer klaren Beurteilung durchringen, darum 4 bis 4,5 von 5 Bonehands…
Nichts destotrotz – das Album gehört in die gut sortierte Plattensammlung, also; kaufen!

It is already clear that the new album „Power Up“ will make it to the top of the charts. It would be very difficult for AC/DC to make such a bad album that this does not happen. The question remains for the time being whether the album is good enough to justify high chart positions purely musically.

Since 2014, fans have been waiting for new material from the Australians, and one thing I can say in advance; they will enjoy the album. And also right from the start; no big surprises. „Power Up“ is a typical, solid AC/DC album, no more, no less.
The album has a lot of bang, songwriting and production are at the usual high level. A dozen songs provide almost an hour of hard rock joy. Something special I have never seen before; the limited edition, announced as „one-of-a-kind Deluxe POWER UP Box“, is the ultimate fan package. Press the button on the side and the AC/DC logo will glow in neon light, while the opening chords of „Shot In The Dark“ will sound from the built-in speakers. Inside the box you will find the entire CD package in a soft pack with a 20-page booklet containing exclusive photos. In addition a USB charging cable to keep the box always „powered up“. The vinyl LP is pressed onto 180 grams of vinyl, covered by a gatefold cover. Limited editions of the LP will be available at selected retailers and in the band’s online store.
An exciting question remains. Are there tracks that stand out, that will be liked by fans faster than others? „Through The Mists Of Time“ I find rhythmically exciting, a kind of midtempo without the usual stomp groove of the band. „Demon Fire“ has the typical stomp rhythm of the band, but is much more varied and enriched with a lot of blues rock. The guitar partly sounds a bit like in the early Rock’n’Roll times. This should be a sing-along track in the stadiums.
Also located in the mid-tempo area is „No Man’s Land“, a bit chilly but still one hundred percent AC/DC.
A totally two hundred percent typical AC/DC rammer with all the ingredients that make up the band is the last track on the album „Code Red“ – the track has the hottest solo on the album.

Conclusion

Well, I cannot break out into storms of enthusiasm. The album is what AC/DC fans expect, the level is as high as usual and the sound is solid. But there are no surprises, songs that could become big hits are missing in my opinion. AC/DC have the same problem that other cult bands have – the list of superhits is so long that this can hardly be achieved, let alone topped. For once I can’t bring myself to make a clear assessment, so 4 to 4.5 out of 5 bonehands…
Nevertheless – the album belongs in the well-assorted record collection, so; buy!
