METALLICA – „Master Of Puppets“

Mit „Master Of Puppets“ veröffentlichen METALLICA ihr bereits drittes Album. Die einzige Single des Albums ist denn auch der gleichnamige Titeltrack. Das letzte Album mit Clive Burton am Bass gilt als Meilenstein im Backkatalog der Band und zeigt erste Ansätze, die Genregrenzen des Thrash Metal aufzusprengen. In über 8 Minuten besingt die Band das Thema Drogenmissbrauch und damit verbundenen Kontrollverlust – wie ein Puppenspieler übernehmen die Drogen die Kontrolle über das Leben des Protagonisten. Zur Hälfte des Songs spendiert uns METALLICA einen melodiösen und unverzerrten Instrumental-Teil mit Twin-Gitarren, der sich langsam aufbaut und in einem Metal-Gewitter mündet.

Einige Passagen von „Master Of Puppets“ wurden langsamer und tiefer gestimmt aufgenommen und am Ende für das Mixen und Mastern schneller abgespielt. So konnten METALLICA mit der höchst möglichen Präzision (gell Lars 😉 ) einspielen.

Zu neuem Ruhm gelangte „Master Of Puppets“ durch die Streaming Serie „Stranger Things“, in welcher der Song prominent gefeatured wurde und es METALLICA mit „Master Of Puppets“ gelang, in die US und UK und anderen Länder-Charts vorzustossen, was dem Stück 1986 verwehrt blieb. Der Song erscheint in unzähligen Besten-Listen als bester Metal Song, Guitar Songs und natürlich METALLICA Songs.

MEGADETH – „Peace Sells“

„Peace Sells“ ist die zweite Single vom fast gleichnamigen zweiten Album „Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying“ der Thrasher MEGADETH. Während der Aufnahmearbeiten erstand Capitol Records die Rechte an dem Album und setzte einen neuen Produzenten für den finalen Mix ein. Die Aufnahmen am Album gestalteten sich schwierig, da Drogenmissbrauch in der Band an der Tagesordnung stand. Im Song „Peace Sells“ stellt Mustaine seine politischen und sozialen Ideologien in den Vordergrund und dem Wunsch nach strukturellem Wandel. Es war auch das erste Stück von MEGADETH, das ein eigenes Musikvideo spendiert bekam, das auf MTV Hoch und Runter lief.

Das Intro mit dem unverwechselbaren Bass-Riff sticht besonders heraus und gibt dem Song einen ikonischen Einstieg. Selbiges Riff steht nicht nur am Anfang des Songs, sondern war auch die Initialzündung für das Songwriting, welches gemäss Aussagen der Band „in wenigen Stunden“ vollbracht war. Über 8 Minuten lang schlug Drummer Samuelson vor, den Song auf 4 Minuten zu kürzen, um ihn als Single veröffentlichen zu können.

Mit „Peace Sells“ erreichten MEGADETH ein grösseres Publikum, und sowohl Album als auch Song schaffen es immer wieder in verschiedenste Bestenlisten. Und in den Liner-Notes der 25th Anniversary Reissue von „Piece Sells… But Who’s Buying“ kommt sogar Lars Ulrich zu Wort, und Song und Album waren Inspiration für viele nachfolgende Musikerinnen und Musiker.

SLAYER- „Raining Blood“

Mit ihrem dritten Studio Album „Reign In Blood“ wurde auch der Wechsel zu Rick Rubin’s Plattenlabel „Def Jam“ vollzogen. Mit Rubin an den Reglern gewannen die Songs an Tiefe und Gewicht und wurden im Vergleich zu den Vorgängern auch kürzer und prägnanter. Als Single wurden „Postmortem“ und „Criminally Insane“ ausgesucht, wir haben uns hier aber für eine Würdigung von „Raining Blood“ entschieden.

Inhaltlich geht es um einen Kerl, der vom Himmel in die Hölle verbannt wurde und nun nach Rache sehnt, was ihm dann letztlich wohl gelingt, denn am Ende des Songs regnet das Blut der Engel auf die Erde hinab. Oder Hölle. Je nachdem wo er sich in diesem Moment gerade befindet. Kein Wunder ist „Raining Blood“ in der SLAYER Gemeinde einer der beliebtesten Songs, der Zusammen mit „Angel Of Death“ (der erste Song des Albums, „Raining Blood“ ist der Letzte) eine Art Buchrücken für die Stücke dazwischen bildet und in fast jedem Live-Set der Band vorkommt.

„Raining Blood“ fand auch den Weg in die Popkultur, sei es über South Park oder Grand Theft Auto. Zu erwähnen vielleicht auch die Coverversion von Tory Amos, welche den Song für ihr Album „Strange Little Girls“ einspielte (den Song gibt’s unten in der englischen Sektion zum anhören). Tory erhielt darauf von der Band ein paar T-Shirts. Schliessen möchten wir hier mit dem Zitat von Kerry King zu diesem Cover: „It took me a minute and a half to find a spot in the song where I knew where she was. It’s so weird. If she had never told us, we would have never known. You could have played it for us and we’d have been like, ‚What’s that?‘ Like a minute and a half through I heard a line and was like, ‚I know where she’s at!“

With ‘Master Of Puppets’, METALLICA released their third album. The album’s sole single is the title track of the same name. The last album to feature Clive Burton on bass is regarded as a milestone in the band’s back catalogue and shows the first signs of breaking down the genre boundaries of thrash metal. Over the course of more than 8 minutes, the band sings about drug abuse and the associated loss of control – like a puppeteer, the drugs take control of the protagonist’s life. Halfway through the song, METALLICA treat us to a melodic, undistorted instrumental section featuring twin guitars, which builds slowly and culminates in a metal storm.

Some passages of ‘Master Of Puppets’ were recorded at a slower, lower tempo and then played back faster during mixing and mastering. This allowed METALLICA to record with the highest possible precision (right, Lars 😉 ).

‘Master Of Puppets’ achieved renewed fame through the streaming series ‘Stranger Things’, in which the song was prominently featured, and METALLICA managed to break into the US, UK and other national charts with ‘Master Of Puppets’ – something the track was denied in 1986. The song appears in countless best-of lists as the best metal song, guitar song and, of course, METALLICA song.

‘Master Of Puppets’ has won numerous gold and platinum awards.

‘Peace Sells’ is the second single from the thrash metal band MEGADETH’s second album, ‘Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying’, which shares a similar title. During the recording process, Capitol Records acquired the rights to the album and brought in a new producer for the final mix. Recording the album proved difficult, as drug abuse was rife within the band. In the song ‘Peace Sells’, Mustaine brings his political and social ideologies to the fore, along with a desire for structural change. It was also the first MEGADETH track to be given its own music video, which was played repeatedly on MTV.

The intro, with its unmistakable bass riff, stands out in particular and gives the song an iconic opening. That same riff not only appears at the start of the song but was also the initial spark for the songwriting, which, according to the band, was completed “in a matter of hours”. At over 8 minutes long, drummer Samuelson suggested cutting the song down to 4 minutes so it could be released as a single.

With ‘Peace Sells’, MEGADETH reached a wider audience, and both the album and the song continue to feature in a wide variety of best-of lists. And in the liner notes of the 25th Anniversary Reissue of ‘Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying’, even Lars Ulrich has his say, and the song and album have been an inspiration to many subsequent musicians.

SLAYER- „Raining Blood“

Their third studio album, ‘Reign In Blood’, also marked their move to Rick Rubin’s record label, ‘Def Jam’. With Rubin at the controls, the songs gained depth and weight, and were also shorter and more concise than their predecessors. ‘Postmortem’ and ‘Criminally Insane’ were chosen as singles, but we’ve decided to pay tribute to ‘Raining Blood’ here.

Lyrically, it’s about a bloke who’s been banished from heaven to hell and now craves revenge – which he ultimately seems to achieve, as at the end of the song the blood of angels rains down upon the earth. Or hell. Depending on where he happens to be at that moment. No wonder “Raining Blood” is one of the most popular songs in the SLAYER community; together with “Angel Of Death” (the first track on the album, “Raining Blood” is the last), it forms a sort of backbone for the tracks in between and features in almost every one of the band’s live sets.

‘Raining Blood’ has also found its way into pop culture, whether through South Park or Grand Theft Auto. Perhaps worth mentioning is also the cover version by Tori Amos, who recorded the song for her album ‘Strange Little Girls’. Tori received a few T-shirts from the band as a result.
