1986 war ein ikonisches Jahr für Musik. Der Grundstein für viele Karrieren wurde gelegt. Dies ist eine sehr subjektive Liste von 12 grandiosen Songs, welche dieses Jahr 40 werden. Jeden Monat einer.

Ja, CINDERELLA’s „Shake Me“ ist ein bisschen eine Mogelpackung, da der Song bereits 1984 im Eigenvertrieb aufgenommen und veröffentlicht wurde. Da hiess er aber noch „Shake Me!“. Und weil das Ausrufezeichen letztlich in der Tracklist ihres Debut Albums „Night Songs“ weggefallen ist, nehmen wir den Song in unsere 12 werden 40 Liste auf. Klar, auf Night Songs fanden sich auch „Nobody’s Fool“ und „Somebody Save Me“, von denen es ersteres sogar in die Top 20 der US Charts geschafft hat. Aber lassen wir Balladen mal Balladen sein und konzentrieren uns auf das rockige „Shake Me“.
Gegründet wurden CINDERELLA 1983 in einem Vorort von Philadelphia durch Tom Keifer und Bassist Eric Brittingham. Von der Aufmachung her klassische Hair Rocker hatten CINDERELLA jedoch einen erdigeren Glam Rock Ansatz, der vor allem in späteren Alben präsenter werden sollte. Jedenfalls, die Band probte fleissig und hatte zwischenzeitlich das Interesse von Gene Simmons geweckt. Schliesslich war es jedoch Jon Bon Jovi, der die Band bei einem Live Auftritt sah und auf seinen A&R (Artist & Repertoire – das waren diejenigen, die früher für das Aufbauen von Künstlern/Bands verantwortlich waren) Mann einredete, die Band zu verpflichten. Jon Bon Jovi trug auch ein paar Backing Voccals zu ein paar Songs des ersten Albums der Band bei. Vor der Arbeit am Debut Album trennte man sich vom Schlagzeuger und zweiten Gitarristen, welche darauf die Band BRITNEY FOX gründeten.
Das Debut Album „Night Songs“ wurde im Juni 1986 veröffentlicht, erreichte in den USA 3-Fach Platin Status und schaffte es bis auf Platz 3 der US Billboard Charts. Während „Shake Me“ den Eintritt in die Top 100 verfehlte, konnte die Band mit „Nobody’s Fool“ einen kleinen Hit, der die Chartleiter bis auf Platz 12 hochkletterte. Entgegen der Chart-Erfolge wurde das Album von Musik-Kritikern eher gemischt aufgenommen, als generische Kopien von Mötley Crüe und Poison bezeichnet. Aber wie so oft: Only time will tell, if it stands the test of time – um die Lyrics aus dem in dieser Serie behandelten VAN HALEN Song zu zitieren. Und so schafft es „Night Songs“ mittlerweile in etliche Listen der besten Hair Metal Alben.
Das Video zu „Shake Me“ ist eine moderne Aschenbrödel (Cinderella) Story, bei welcher die beiden bösen Stiefschwestern – gekleidet in Polka-Dot Klamotten – zum CINDERELLA Konzert gehen, aber nicht reinkommen. Natürlich schafft es Aschenbrödel selbst bis in die Limousine der Band schafft. Das Motiv der gepunkteten Kleider und der zwei etwas treudoofen Girls zieht sich auch durch die Videos von „Nobody’s Fool“ und „Somebody Save Me“, wobei in letzterem auch Jon Bon Jovi und Richie Sambora einen Cameo Auftritt haben.
Um die Veröffentlichung zu promoten zogen CINDERELLA als Support Band mit POISON, LOUDNESS, DAVID LEE ROTH und BON JOVI durch die Arenen dieser Welt. Nach „Night Songs“ entwickelte die Band ihren Sound weiter: Der Blues Rock rückte stärker in den Vordergrund, während die Glam-Metal-Wurzeln weiterhin hörbar blieben.

Yes, CINDERELLA’s “Shake Me” is a bit of a misnomer, as the song was actually recorded and released independently back in 1984. At that time, however, it was still called “Shake Me!”. And because the exclamation mark was ultimately omitted from the tracklist of their debut album “Night Songs”, we’re including the song in our ‘12 to 40’ list. Of course, “Night Songs” also featured “Nobody’s Fool” and “Somebody Save Me”, the former of which even made it into the Top 20 of the US charts. But let’s leave ballads to be ballads and focus on the rock-tinged “Shake Me”.
CINDERELLA were formed in 1983 in a suburb of Philadelphia by Tom Keifer and bassist Eric Brittingham. Although they looked like classic hair rockers, CINDERELLA had a more down-to-earth glam rock approach, which was to become particularly prominent on their later albums. In any case, the band rehearsed diligently and had, in the meantime, caught the attention of Gene Simmons. Ultimately, however, it was Jon Bon Jovi who saw the band perform live and persuaded his A&R (Artist & Repertoire – the people who used to be responsible for developing artists and bands) manager to sign them. Jon Bon Jovi also provided backing vocals on a couple of tracks from the band’s debut album. Before work began on the debut album, the band parted ways with their drummer and second guitarist, who went on to form the band BRITNEY FOX.
Their debut album, „Night Songs“, was released in June 1986, achieved triple platinum status in the US and reached number 3 in the US Billboard charts. Whilst „Shake Me“ failed to make it into the Top 100, the band scored a minor hit with „Nobody’s Fool“, which climbed as high as number 12 in the charts. Despite its chart success, the album received a rather mixed reception from music critics, who described it as a generic copy of Mötley Crüe and Poison. But as is so often the case: only time will tell if it stands the test of time – to quote the lyrics from the VAN HALEN song featured in this series. And so “Night Songs” now features in numerous lists of the best hair metal albums.
The video for “Shake Me” is a modern-day Cinderella story, in which the two wicked stepsisters – dressed in polka-dot outfits – go to the CINDERELLA concert but aren’t allowed in. Of course, Cinderella herself manages to make it all the way into the band’s limousine. The theme of the polka-dot dresses and the two somewhat ditzy girls also runs through the videos for “Nobody’s Fool” and “Somebody Save Me”, with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora also making cameo appearances in the latter.
To promote the album, CINDERELLA toured the world’s arenas as the support act for POISON, LOUDNESS, DAVID LEE ROTH and BON JOVI. Following *Night Songs*, the band continued to develop their sound: blues rock came more to the fore, whilst their glam metal roots remained audible.
